Just opened the mail to handle my new 0550 and i have to say im blown away by it. ive always been a flipper or speedsafe guy its what turned me on to knife collecting in first place.....so when i ordered the 0550 i had alot of 2nd guessing about if id like it. But the smoothness of the thump stud and speed has put my doubts to rest and than some. now i just have to find some custom scales for it!!!! may never leave my pocket

Congrats on your 0550. I am a HUGE fan of it. The pic has a custom scale made by Rival. I am having a wood scale made of Koa and can't wait. The bottom line is that if you want a custom scale for you 0550, there are a LOT of options. It's a good thing too because I find the G10 stock scale for the 0550 hideous.

thanks im not big fan of the scale on it myself its ok i guess but i want something to set it off!!!! Do u have any names of places u can share for good scales?

Hey Northend
I'm with you, I LOVE the 550 even though the stock scale isn't exactly what I wanted.

The Preacher and Rival both sell on here in the knife makers forum and as I have one scale from each can tell you they both do fantastic work. Kryptoglow also makes some really cool looking scales and I have one shipping today for a 560/1 that I want to spiff up.

I'll get some pictures posted of both scales soon in the thread for knife mods in this subforum.

It looks as if commonguy001 covered it as far as I know with regards to makers on this forum doing some cool, unique scales. I have heard great things about all of those guys!

The 0550 is my favorite ZT folder!

I have two the 0550 and the 0550BLK. The former needed a little break in since the titanium lock was sticking (sharpie treatment plus a couple of hundred open/close cycles solved it in a couple of days). The latter was perfect from day one.

Opening the knife requires the thumb to be placed at the six o'clock of the stud and pushed straight up and then clockwise. Once you get the hang of it it's silky smooth.

On my 0550BLK I put a Rick Henderer Carbon Fiber scale and not only does it make it look stunning but it feels better in my hands with a much smoother texture and narrower.

I have my 0550BLK in my pocket know. It deploys fast, after a little practice you should have no problems. I really like this knife.

0550BLK all the way unless they come out with the 0551BLK with Elmax blade.

I'm partial to Carbon Fiber scales. Mine above is by Rick Hinderer. The two below it are by Rival and I'm getting that bottom one as well.

I guess I'm constantly against the flow around here with regard to the 550. While I think the Kryptoglow and Rival scales are beautiful, I have never felt a need to replace the scales on either my 550 or 560. Particularly the 550. They work extremely well for me as the came from the factory. Not knocking anyone who wants to spend the money to dress either up, but I don't see the need to do it because of a shortcoming of the original scales.

BTW, congrats to the OP on your purchase. Just opened the mail to receive my new ZT 0700. I think this thing is a sleeper of a knife. Initial impression: I like it.

Personally, my reasoning in changing the scale on the 0550 is both aesthetics and grip.

I don't like the looks of the factory scale and the ridged G10 scale is too aggressive.

thanks....im looking foward to seeing pics ill get those places out

Ah, so you did pull the trigger. Congrats! After dressing it up, I'd like to see it get used and dirty! New knife, I know... but I don't do exciting things and so I must live vicariously through others who use their knives properly (or improperly. Those are the "exciting" ones)

I just let one of my 0550s go recently and I miss it already. :( Don't know what I was thinking, but if I replace it with a 0551 I think I'll get over it pretty quickly :D
