Hey guys, sorry to do this to you guys (I wish KAI had a seperate forum) but whats up with my detent hole on my 0562?

As far as I can tell from other peoples 0562, the detent hole isn't visible at all when the blade is deployed. Plus, my hole seems to be bigger?

I'm not really bothered by how it looks, but how it operates... it seems to have a very stiff detent. I can do a rocker flipper deployment, but a push button style flipper deployment just doesn't deploy and hurts my manly fingers . No my fingers are not on the lockbar, I have a 560, 550, 777, 350, 200, 780 ZT's, so this issue seems uncharacteristic.

What appears to be two stages of a detent hole.

So, what do you guys think? Normal? Am I crazy?

I have read about the double drilling of the detent hole somewhere but don't remember the details. I can tell you that ZT is setting the flippers up to have stronger detents to the degree that the push button technique does not work (450, 452CF and etc). Light switch action on modern ZT flippers are the norm these days as all of my recent ones are that way.

The hole is normal. The strength of the detent is normal as well. Its simply how they are setting up the knives now. The action with use with tame a bit but its purpose is to ensure that the knife will open completely each and every time once the detent is overcome. I would give it time to break in. The new set up really does favor the light switch method. It will be the most effective and comfortable.

The visible detent hole is an issue if you want it to be. You can always send it in, they started the double detent holes due to some folks not liking a weak detent. The bigger hole gives the knife a stronger detent. If the visible detent hole doesn't bother you, enjoy the knife. It will take several hundred openings before the knife will be smooth and the detent to loosen up.

Right on, this answers everything for me. This is what I'll do. I'll just flip it a 1000 times.

I'm not one to complain usually about stiff detents or aggressive jimping because my hands are pretty callused, but this thing truly is stiff and uncomfortable. If it doesn't get better I may have to send it in!

Thank you very much.

also about the visible hole, if it makes you feel better there are tons of makers including kirby lambert who dont worry about such things. That used to bug me but I have forgiven it. Your knife will get easier. Its never going to have a weak detent, but that initial break will ease up a bit. The holes seem to be cut with a end mill and have a very sharp shoulder so the break is crisp. That shoulder will round a bit as the ball bearing interfaces with it. Theoretically the lockbar could be tweaked a tad if it is unbearable for you. But I would let kai do that. Very small tweaks to the lockbar can equal huge differences in the detent strength. But if overdone you can negatively effect lockup, and lock effectiveness. Id say your current plan is spot on.

Right on, Kirby actually lives in the same small city as me in the middle of nowhere in Canada.

The visible hole does not bother me. This is a tool to be used. All I care is that it deploys better, and with enough break in time it sounds like it will get better.

Well said and to the point. 👍🏻👊🏻

My 0562 has the original small detent hole while my new 0562CF has the larger stepped hole. The newer knife was impossible to open with the flipper tang, but after oiling it and opening it roughly 1000 times, it is now very nice. In addition, I wrapped some tape around a screwdriver and pryed the lockbar a bit to ease the pressure---that was the biggest improvement and convinced me to not return the knife to Kai for tuning.

Wearing boots also helps, with wool socks.

Hey, I do this at work.

But just an update, the knife definitely broke in very well. I can do both a push button and rocker style open, and it's getting better and better with more ease, all while being comfortable. She's a keeper.

Glad to hear that everything is working out. Yes, the detents are intentionally made harder now than they once were, but that is not to say that every hard detent is supposed to be that way. It is possible that a detent is still harder than intended and so sending it back for evaluation can be a proper course of action. Though as you found, it is usually best to give it a chance to break in before jumping to any reactions.
