Zt 2010

You can't really improve the thumbstud design on the 030x/0350 series. You'd have to alter it altogether. If you move the thumbstud farther away so that the thumb has more leverage, than it won't butt up against the frame anymore. The whole design would be altered. Whether that's an improvement is up for debate, but structurally speaking, I'd argue strongly that thumbstuds acting as stop pins are much stronger than a regular stop pin that's, well, just a cylindrical piece of metal.

I'd say a simpler solution, at least for Zero Tolerance design people, is to rework the ZT 0200, since the thumbstuds there don't act as stop pins. They could slap on a framelock and bam...close to an 030x.

True but the Combative Edge M1 has a similar design in that the studs come right up against the G10. The M1's are much taller--something that could be done on the 0300. The M1 also has a divot in the side for the index finger. This doesn't quite line up with the stud but it helps.

I'm looking forward to ZT's new knives for 2010, except the 0750 talon shaped knife. From the SHOT Show pics, the 0750 looks like it will have studs as the stop pin, like the 0300. Will it also feature incredibly useless thumb studs like the 0300? Did ZT mention any continuing improvements on their current series of knives, like making the 0300's studs capable of being used?

I nearly sliced my thumb in half on my Kershaw Skyline trying to open it with the thumbstuds.

Yes, the joke is on me. It is a mean joke by Kershaw/ZT that cost me money--"Just push on the ambidextrous thumb stud ..." for the 0300 and "Even in combat gloves, you can easily deploy the blade using the large, ambidextrous thumb stud ..." for the 0350. So, the better question is "Are they going to change the description of their knives or change the actual knives?"

Typical case of ignorant poster.

Blunt and true. If you can't open a ZT with the thumbstud... wow I guess I'm kinda shocked. Just don't say that it's true for everyone else. I can open up my ZT's with my thumb crazy fast.

I haven't met someone who couldn't open a ZT using their thumb.

Me either.

There's no need for such attacks. I've been a longtime lurker--long enough to know fanboys will be fanboys and a great deal of posts are immature like yours. Show some class; your post count doesn't make you better than anyone.
I'm not going to refrain from criticizing just because there are many fanboys.

I think it's rather obvious who is on the attack.

I told you to practice, because the product isn't defective, as did many others. You told me I was ignorant, which among all the things I am, ignorant about ZT knives is not on the list.

But I agree with you! I will be classy after the name calling. ;)

Don't worry about it. Everyone goes though confrontation sooner or later and often repeats the process. Part of the online "experience".

Amper124, PaulWall, J.Mattson, UpChUck, Dorito Monk and Jwlister--thanks for the input.

You're welcome.

I'm not going to refrain from criticizing just because there are many fanboys. I'm most critical of the companies I like. ZT is one of my favorite companies and I think their thumbstud design should be improved on the 0300 series. I posted hoping to find out if any design changes are in place for 2010 because I know Thomas posted that some knives were undergoing revisions after comments from the SHOT show.

If you've seen any of Ankerson's videos of him batoning his ZT0300 through wood, you will see just how strong the pivot is on a ZT 300 series folder. The stop-pin thumbstuds contribute to this strength I'm sure. Could the thumbstud design be imroved for easier opening? Sure. But as with anything, it would be a compromise. It may reduce the strength of the lockup. And since the 300's are designed as flippers primarily, I feel the design call was a good one. I'm not a knife maker/engineer but I believe this to be true, accurate or not.

BTW: My first experience opening my Random Leek with the thumbstud resulted in a nice slice down the pad of my thumb. After a little practice I didn't have that problem anymore with any AO knives with thumbstuds.
