Aside from the price difference, which of these knives is superior? I've had an 801bw and loved it but ended up letting it go. Now I'm in the market for another or something better. It's down to Elmax versus S35VN. I only really have experience with Elmax and with S30V. Also, I have heard that the 0095 is a great slicer for such a large knife. To those who own both, which is your preference and why? Thanks for the input.

I have and love both but I'd buy the 0095 again before the 0801. It just fits my hand better. You really can't lose with either knife though.

I prefer the 0095, it is definitely a better slicer. I like the long belly it has.
Don't think you'd see a big difference between the Elmax and S35VN. Both are good steels.
The handle shape of the 0095 for me is more natural than the 0801.

Thanks guys, that's exactly the sort of info I needed.

0095 👍
There's a sweet 0095 in s90v in the exchange now.

Sir, you stirred the embers of my soul when I read that. A clip-point blade of S90V with a thickness of only 0.120" is bound to be a great slicer. That is an exciting limited offer. I love S90V and thin blades that cut well. A fun knife, as it only weighs 5.3 ounces at 0.480" grip thickness....much like a lge Sebbie or Zaan... Could be a fun knife that could even see some work in the kitchen with veggies.

I don't have an 0801 but I have been carrying a 0095 as my primary EDC knife for a while now and I love the damn thing. Such a cool knife IMO. To me it is the perfect balance of a sleek sophisticated design with a big knife, and the BW finish just adds to this. And yes, a great slicer indeed.

I would suggest buying an 0801 variant right now, while they are so cheap (such a great value for the current prices), and pick up an 0095 when you build funds back up. I, personally, waited for the Sprint Run 0095S90BLK instead of just jumping on the 0095BW, and I am glad I did. I'm sure that the standard 0095BW is a great knife in its own right, but I love me some Sprint Runs and LEs!

I am debating between the sprint run 0095 and the regular bw. For $20 more I got the upgraded steel in s90v but am just not sure about the black coating. Yes I know dlc is very tough but still, one scratch would ruin the beauty and resale value. The same reason that holds me back for 0804.

Back to the OP topic, yes this is a good time to grab a 0801 for a vert good price.

If it will be a user don't worry about it.

I have had both, and sold the 801. The 0095 is awesome.

With the 0095, you get a longer blade (3.625 vs 3.5 inches)

The blade is much better for slicing, dicing, penetrating and detail work. The spine is 0.12 inches thick, vs. 0.16 inches for the 801. The blade also has a much better distal taper out to the point, whereas the 801 has that bullnose geometry that makes penetrating and detail work more difficult.

While offering more blade space and length, the 0095 is lighter, 5.3 oz vs 5.8 oz.

The 0095 has a hollow ground blade, vs a flat ground blade on the 801, giving the 0095 still more advantage as a slicer.

The edge-shoulder width on my 0095 is 0.025 inches, not super thin but decent. I don't know what the edge width of the 801 is, but I'd guess it's thicker.

Both flip and handle with ease. Both are very well made. The 801 is probably better as a pry bar or for super heavy use, but the 0095 will cut circles around it.

Looks are in the eye of the beholder. Personally I like the 0095 a lot better. It's one of my favorite knives.

Thanks guys. This has been incredibly informative. Might buy the 801bw soon because of price, but I did pick up an 0095 for a great deal on BF. Can't wait to get it.
