I have to send my 0562cf in because apparently I got a lemon with very early and shallow lockup. I’ll obviously have to pay to ship it to them but will they cover the costs to ship it back?

Your best bet would be to ask them, as they are the only people who can give you a definitive answer.

+1 on what unwisefool said. Questions like that are best addressed to the folks you will be dealing with.

One question on your perceived problem - does the shallow lockup cause a safety problem, that is, does the knife come unlocked during use, or do you just prefer a deeper lockup?

They covered return shipping for me. I sent them a few knives for sharpening a year-or-so ago. YMMV.

Well I also have a g10 0562 and compared to that lockup my 0562cf lockup feels like it’s defective it’s so shallow. I’ve looked up pictures of 0562cfs and my lockup definitely isn’t normal. I ended up asking them like you guys said to do about the return shipping and they told me they cover it.

Too early lockup? Look at some pictures of shirogorov folders. Some of them have about 5% lockup. Personally I prefer lockup between 30-60%.

The few times I used KAI warranty, they covered the returning shippibg.

KAI covers return shipping. I think Spyderco and Benchmade do as well.

Early lockup as a desirable trait only made sense to me when Ti framelocks typically had bare Ti lock interfaces with the tang of the blade, and could potentially wear in significantly over time. Other than that, it just seems pointlessly dangerous. It might be a show of precision and technical skill pf the maker, but good lord would that make me nervous as a user.

Here’s the pictures. The 0562cf is on top and the g10 0562 is on the bottom.

host it on imgur, insert the picture URL into comment. interested to see how early, though i'd like to see the silly early lockups trend their way out as well.

Did it. I was trying to insert the url but it wasn’t working so I just pasted the link

just add ".jpg" to the end of link when you use insert. that's the direct link. you can copy it straight from the imgur pic as well. thanks for posting tho. i'd have been uncomfortable with the lock up

is second pic the same knife? or your other one with the decent lock up? that one looks fine

edit: nvm you said just that

Pretty sure Spyderco makes you pay return shipping, $20 for warranty work, $5 to send it back. At least that was my understanding.

Looks like 15%-20% lock-up. I've had plenty of knives with early lock up which were just fine. The percent of lock face engagement is rarely ever the deciding factor on whether a frame/liner lock will fail, it has a lot more to do with the geometry, material(s), and finishing on the lock interface. So basically I'm saying that it really isn't an issue if you say done some careful, light spine-whacks on cardboard or something and it hasn't failed.

But if that doesn't matter to you, then feel free to send it to ZT; they usually cover return shipping if you're in the USA.
