I bought a ZT0100 and found out it is a factory second. Should I buy a new one that isn't a factory second? Could the heat treatment be bad? I emailed ZT and they said that their factory seconds are caused by cosmetic features only. Thanks for the help!

I don't think Kershaw or ZT would sell a second with a bad heat treat. The biggest difference you would notice is that you can't get it sharpened or warrantied but I don't think you would need it unless you were doing very extreme abuse.

Thanks for the reply, I just want the best quality I can get. I'll probably buy another but they aren't that easy to find.

The factory seconds are cosmetic only, a lot of times it's hard to see why its a factory second. They mark the blade with x's, that means ZT does not offer a warranty on seconds.

^ Interesting! I have both a NIB ZT0100, & also a factory second that I picked up here off the exchange from a friend. For the life of me, comparing these 2 knives I wasn't ever able to figure out "why," Zero Tolerance quality control labeled the latter a factory second. It looks perfectly fine, esthetically.

If I were you, I'd be happy that you have one that you can abuse, & is most likely as good, use wise, as an unblemished model. I used & carried my factory second while I was working up in Idaho last year. It performed (cut), as well as any other fixed blade I've used before.

I'm definitely curious to see what a couple of the more knowledgeable member's like Ram Zahr, Mqqn, or Stabman has to say, regarding what ZT's criteria is for marking these as factory seconds.

The knife is awesome and looks great, the only thing I can see that is different are the x's and the coating is a matte gray. But the coating color varies in the pictures I have seen online.

I will confirm that they are only cosmetic issues that will make a blem knife. Things like marks in the coating, a scratch, maybe the one side of the sharpening bevel is bigger than the other.
It had been said by many reps over the years from Kershaw and ZT that they will never put out a knife that has something wrong with it that will put the user in physical harm. So there will never be a knife that has a bad heat treatment, bad lock bar, etc.... strictly cosmetic in nature or it never sees the light of day outside the factory.

Also for the past two or three years, ZT has stopped selling blemished models so you won't see any of the new models marked as blemishes.

Hope this helps!
