got her in and am pretty happy.

have seen stuff on youtube and amazon that scared me off for a good while but i was convinced by lack of lots of reports here and some kind encouragement.

one ser range 5xxx on you tube had a round pivot and just looked crude , maybe it was fake. also lots of problems with sticky lock on amazon reviews but mine is fine, yes this knife is harder to unlock than most framelocks but that is by design. so ill attribute those complaints to girlythumbs.

also saw several where they forgot to machine a relief hole, but the xm18 doesnt have one so i decided not to worry.
if you notice they actually machine a long ovalur relief cut now (maybe to help those with girly thumbs)

the detent however is too stiff, the detent actually fits into a cup machined in the blade , none of my other framelocks have thos hole in the blade for the detent to mate to. does the xm18?

i put a dab of scheilriegen paste in the hole and on the steel lock insert and will play with it, then flush her out and lube it up and see if that helps things.

hopefully this helps the thumbstud open method.

the g10 side has a large ovaluar cutout that is equal to or greater than the amount removed in the previous gens. so im happy with that. the lock side has no lightening cuts.

knife made weight at just under 7 oz and balances well so no complaints.

posting this as all my reservations from reading reviews and youtubing are all resolved and i have a great knife!

Glad to hear that you are enjoying the knife. The knife is actually designed to be opened by the flipper, rather then the thumb stud (which is actually the stop pin when open). That is not to say that it is impossible to open that way, but it may be harder to do it that way.

You mentioned that it has a hard detent. One thing to make sure, is that you are not squeezing on the lock bar while trying to open the knife (as you noticed, the detent ball fits into a hole on the blade, if you squeeze the lock bar, you are adding pressure on that detent ball that you will have to overcome).

^^

I've only heard (and experienced) weak detents on these, so either they tightened it or you are pressing on the lockbar as noted above.

Glad you are happy with your new blade....

Like mentioned, those aren't thumb studs, they are blade stops by design...it's a flipper, try getting used to flipping the knife...

As for the detent, it's more common then not to have a hole/cup in the blade for the ball to rest in...that's how the "detent" works...

i understand that their purpose. trying to weaken the detent and use the studs is simply to be able to deploy the blade slowly with one hand.

i get my knife out a lot and have found a slow deployment is more discreet.

interesting some report weak detents, this one is crazy stiff.

My two 0560s are very stiff. I like them that way. Better to have too stiff than too weak IMO. I don't use the thumb studs. I don't care about being discreet!

For "discreet" opening, put you're thumb on the spine of the blade by the thumb studs, use your finger on the flipper to overcome the detent. Stop the blade with you're thumb, then use the thumb stud to open the blade the rest of the way in a slow, controlled manner. If you use your thumb to break the detent, it'll just rocket out as fast as if you'd used the flipper.
This way you can open the knife as "discretely" as say, a benchmade Adamas. Super sheeple friendly, just do it behind your back, with your back to a wall.
Enjoy the new knife.
