ZT0770CF IN M4? Why didn't anyone tell me?

Agreed on the AO. If I had a choice between AO vs manual it would be the manual in a heart beat. But I will take an AO in this steel, hardness and scale set if it is the only way it is offered.
I wasn't thrilled with ZT's decision to use AO when I first heard about the 0770CF. But I'd been hammering on ZT for so long to make a lightweight EDC that when it was finally released, I just held my nose and jumped on it. The 0770CF wasn't my first choice either. I was hoping (and still hope) that ZT makes a 3.0" version of the 0562CF. But I figured the 0770CF might be the only opportunity I'd ever have to EDC a knife from ZT and I definitely wasn't going to pass up the opportunity. Turns out the 0770CF is such a winner that when ZT released its second lightweight knife . . . the 0450 . . . it didn't stand a chance with me. I'm not sure what ZT would have to make in the way of a lightweight folder that would surpass the 0770CF in my estimation. But the 0450 isn't it. If ZT ever decides to release an 0450 with a CF scale, however, I might end up singing a different tune. ;)

Like this?

okay it's aftermarket - but still obtainable.

Yes, I know. But I'm not willing to pay aftermarket prices for a knife I personally feel ZT should have made in the first place. The 0450 should have been the spitting image of the 0452CF except scaled down. If they had made it that way, I'd have bought it in a heartbeat. (Your custom is wonderful, by the way.  :) )

I really like all the ZT's I own - but I do wish my 0808 was lighter. If it was comparable to the 450 it would be perfect IMO.

Like many have said here, I also think the 0770CF is a great big lightweight knife but ergonomically I still prefer the 450 and 0808. I'm hoping someone will make a carbon scale for the 0808 and that will lighten up to my liking. I've already replaced the thick backspacer with standoffs, but that barely saved any weight.

also not a fan of the OA on mine...but I deal with it.

Thanks for the compliments about my 0450. I never thought I would ever get this knife until I saw that someone was making aftermarket carbon scales for it....that pushed me over the edge ;)

I am not completely sure how many we had in the beginning, but we have had several replenishing runs from ZT. It has been a good seller. Not as great as I had hoped.

How many would you say you've received from ZT?

ZT 0450 and 0808 over 0770CF for me too because I prefer narrower profiles. Hopefully, we'll see a lighter 0808 (CF + standoffs) and a 0450CF!

I'm surprised the replacement of the 0808 backspacer with titanium standoffs did not reduce the weight by much?! 0808 is a little too bottom heavy for what it is and it's my only real gripe about it. Love the blade shape.

Still, compared to 0350 and 0566 with the same blade length the 0808 is a featherweight.

ZT 0350, 0566, 0770CF, 0808 and 0450 all have 3.25" blades.

Acadian, I really dig that cf 450!

I just put my 0808 on my digital scale and it's 120g (4.23oz) with a 0560 deep pocket clip. Some weight savings but not really significant.

Thanks - it's been getting a lot of pocket time since getting it. Love it.

The guy making the carbon scales is apparently working on one for the 0808 - fingers crossed.

ZT 0808 has thicker blade than 0770CF and 0450 as well as thicker titanium scales than 0450. That accounts for the extra weight. It's a tough little folder.

yup yup - actually the reason why I like it so much and still carry it quite a bit despite it's weight. Plus I'm a sucker for that blade shape

I just weighed my 450 with Carbon scale and it's 70g (2.47oz)

I'd have carried it at 2.9 oz but I ended up getting a Kizer Splinter instead. I'm still hoping that ZT will wake up and put some CF on the 0450 though. And then there's my 3.0" 0562CF. But I digress . . .

Indeed for me as well, I sold off the very awesome 0770CF I had because I have a strong dislike for AO. I tried for a couple weeks both assisted and deassisted and it just didn't work for me. Deassisted, my model's action was quite lame. Everything else about the knife is A++ though. I especially love the blade profile although the grind at the edge is thicker than my usual utility folders.

In the end, I realize that even though it is AO, I do miss the knife and this M4 model just made that much more irresistible for me.

AO isn't a complete deal-breaker for me. It really depends on the knife. I've got a Kershaw Leek and I couldn't imagine it without AO. I've also got a Benchmade Torrent and I actually LIKE the AO on that knife. But for the most part, a lot of things have to be right about a knife before I'm willing to overlook AO, and in the case of the 0770CF, there are a lot of things right about it . . . or at least there are to me.

Is M4 that much better than M390?

You guys are about to convince me to sell my M390 and get this M4 one.

I need intervention ;)

Nooo, don't do that lol

M390 is still very much a top stainless steel. I just have a thing for M4.

I don't know. If I didn't already own M390 I might go for the M4 version. But I don't think you're giving up enough between those alloys to make the switch. It's your call though.

Don't sell your M390. M390 is an excellent alloy. Get both instead! :)

[insert evil laugh here] that was my initial thought but I was trying to be logical. I knew that was a stupid idea

this is why I love you guys! :)

I've never tried M4 - so this would be a perfect opportunity for me to try.

I need to win the lottery.
