Zytel BK14 handles

They totally change the feel of the knife. It goes from being an everyday utility knife to an everyday everything knife. It can handle bushcrafting, hunting, survival, barbed wire slicing, along with a whole bunch of other uses. It's much more comfortable to hold in your hand with the scales and it also gives it more "umph" to hold on to. Would highly recommend them.

i guess ill go for it, and if i dont like em.... its only 15 bucks :P
but ofcourse... im not the biggest fan of plastic... it always feels cheap... does Zytel have a different feel than other plastics?

Awesome! They change the knife from great neck knife to micro bushcrafter while still maintaining a low profile. And for the price, they're a steal (at least in the knife world for aftermarket scales they are). Awesome!!!!

Buy em and if you don't like em you can probably even split the set and sell them seperately and turn a profit (of like $2, but still).

Dura-coat them or RIT dye them, should be fairly easy. There's an orange mut around here somewhere that can change their color for you via dura-coating them, and probably even do designs if you provide him with a stencil/mask.

RIT dye, you ask? :D

I used concentrated Dark Green RIT dye mixed from powder on my orange zytel scales, here's how they turned out:

Keep in mind though that I wanted to get these closer to green. They ended up being more like a smoky purple or something. I actually love them, turned out to be a happy accident, but keep that in mind heh. I could've used more diluted dye or left them in for less time to have a less dramatic effect, didn't know at the time.

Tip: Make sure you wipe down the scales with rubbing alcohol before dying so that you don't leave any oils from your fingers or whatever on the scales. It will make them dye unevenly. Have fun!

ok, im sold on the scales :P
now i need to do alot of thinking on the dye to get :P
what do you think would be good to get a more rustic look?

Go find that orange mutt I was talking about, he can inform you much better on dura-coating.

Or go get the dye.

I made a set out of some brown tweener scales I had laying around. That's always a fun little project. Here is a pic.

Do the scales come with a set of hardware for each pair of scales? Enough for 2 BK-14s?

Jeremy

Yes they do, 2 pairs of scales and enough hardware for both, I just got mine yesterday,

I'll be the minority and say that after installing and only table top reviewing, I didn't really feel like it was a revelation for me. The handles feel a little slick and somehow don't seem to work too well for my hands, just cutting some cardboard, I felt like I preferred the paracord wrap. I have only had it for less than 24 hours and not put it to use yet, so it just first impressions

Bein' the mutt (two "t's" by the way) of which he speaks.

And we don't need no stinkin' stencils unless you want something REALLY weird.

Try roughing them up a bit with some medium-ish grit sandpaper, it will add texture. Or if you are really fancy you can media blast them if you've got the equipment/skills.

I corrected it in my second post. :p

Speaking of stinkin' stencils, do you remember what I emailed you about at the beginning of summer? If not, I'll shoot you another email when the dark knight returns from the beyond.
