Here is another vintage old timer that should be added to our list, the Western W49 Bowie (not my image).

When Benchmade was in the process of moving from Clackamas to Oregon City I found a box of these, 10 that were seconds apparently, and my boss asked me to polish the handles and sharpen them. He gave them to Les and various vice-presidents and I kept one. The blade was 440C, hand ground (?), and they were perfectly heat treated as mine took a great edge. Chip, I admire your ability to open and close them with one hand! I won't do that.

A friend gave me this one, a Spyderco G2, some time ago. I think these were produced in the early nineties, and no doubt discontinued because the very useful clip gets very unusefully in the way of cutting.

Ah, and I have my own OKC Utilitac II, too, which I quite like.

That’s the Spyderco ā€œSnap-itā€, Weiss. I have one of those around somewhere too, now your post has prompted me to go dig it out from storage 😁

I recall it came out sometime in the 90s together with a sister model called ā€œRemote Releaseā€. And yes the Snap-it’s carabiner hook is easy to clip onto a backpack but does get in the way of cutting, limiting the use of its full blade length.

This was the first knife that I purchased for my collection. It was 1986 and it had taken me a long time to decide between this and the Buck Buckmaster. Gerber Made Knives was an excellent brand back then. The knife went everywhere with me over the next 10 years. Unfortunately, these knives have a serious corrosion problem. The sheath outgases and damages the knife over time. Yes, sawteeth were a bad idea, but we didn't realize that during the 80s and these two were the top of the line. Randall Made would have been considered custom made, Busse was yet be, Cold Steel was known for its self-defense tonto and everything else sold for less than half the price of either the BMF or 184.. If not the most practical knife, it was and remains a rite of passage; and I still like the comfortable hypalon handle and the advance sheath design.

I totally forgot the name. Thanks.
I used to keep it clipped to my camera bag when I used to take a lot of pictures while out and about. It was always handy that way.
