01 for edc?

Well, you guys sold me on it, I was able to snag a sneaky Pete in 01 from this weeks batch, now I'll just have to get/make a sheath for it.

Shakespeare embraced the suck.

LOL! Indeed he did ... as did Caesar … and I'll bet those knives were high carbon …

Great grab! The SP is an excellent design, highly versatile and the ergos are outstanding … currently my favorite Fiddleback … !

That's cool man. I really like the look of the SPCA, especially the grip. Looks chunky and comfortable.

Edit- stupid predictive text... SP, not SPCA.

Sweet snag! Be sure and check out Tal's sheath thread if you're going to make one. Good stuff!

I scuffed up my Alabama Damascus Hiking Buddy getting some small spots off any suggestions how to polish the blade again?

If you want to bring out the damascus pattern I have had good luck using some Birchwood Casey Perma Blue paste.

Red wine vinegar also brings out damascus patterns.

This blade was all shiny with no visible pattern after I ground the full convex. Left it in vinegar for a while to get it to look like this.

Congrats on the new knife. Pics if you can after it arrives!

I Make an IWB Sheath with sweat guard. Carried my EDKarda in such a sheath for a few weeks with no problems. If you're interested in something like that, email me.

Cool , I will def think about that. What do you use for a sweat guard? Any pics?

It's a variation on a Randal style pouch. The back side of the sheath is the sweat guard. Here are some pictures of my EDKarda and it's IWB sheath:

I love being able to tuck this sheath in to my jeans, my belt or a back pocket. On smaller knives, this sheath will even fit into the leg pocket of some Carpenter jeans. Used to carry my Esee Izula like that before I gave it away. Thinking that I may start carrying the EDKarda like that during the winter. Will make getting to it with a sweater or coat on much easier.

There are other options for IWB sheaths, this is just my current favorite. Email me if you're interested in something. you can choose from different colors of leather, black or white thread, Nickel or Black clips and so on. :)

If you are worried about 01 taking an uneven patina (which is actually one of the things I LIKE about it) then you can wipe the whole thing down with a cold blue.

Like Tal says, it's all a coditional thing. I carried stainless...CPM S35VN and CPM 154 knives primarily in Florida when I was don there for months just because of the environment I was in. I carry a CPM S35VN neck knife and have for a solid year because of the raw steel against my sweaty skin. BUT I have edc-ed a lot of O-1, primarily Andy's and some of Dylan's in a pocket quite a bit. If it's a leather sheath your using, as long as the sheath is treated well it should be perfectly fine. If you are edc-ing it, then you'll likely be using it regularly. With a decent patina I don't see how any rust could really get ahead of you. If you use it often and see it regularly. I edc an O-1 Bushraptor in pocket carry mostly, we'll see how it does this summer :)

Any vinegar will work to etch high carbon damascus and showcase the pattern. It's usually done before installing the handle slabs, but can be done after the fact with care. Another product that works faster is ferric chloride (sold at Radio Shack as "board etchant"). It's sold full strength and has to be diluted 4-1 with distilled water to use this way. With either vinegar of ferric the steel has to be free of any oil or grease to get an even etch. I use acetone to get it super clean. When clean, immerse the blade in the vinegar or ferric. With vinegar it can take 20mins. or more to get the effect you want, but ferric will do it in 30sec. or so. To speed things up with vinegar, heat the vinegar to almost boiling and then put the steel in it. The steel will get a dark gray/black coating pretty quickly, but a small area can be wiped with a clean paper towel so you can see how dark it's becoming. Using ferric can result in too much etch and a rough surface if left too long, so check it pretty quickly. When you have the amount of etch that's wanted, spray the blade with old style Windex (has ammonia) to stop the acid reaction. The black residue can be gently cleaned off with 0000steel wool and detergent. A light coat of oil helps set the etch as a finish. You can do the same thing on high carbon blades to force a uniform light gray patina which helps slow down any rust issues. It's also a quick way to show the transition line from an edge quench when using 10XX steels.

The bluing paste works well, too. Does give a little different look.

So whatcha think then Alabama Damascus Hiking Buddy etch or not?

Shane, that decision has to be made by you depending on what you like. Remember, too, it's not an irreversible process. If you don't like the results, it can be buffed back to original. I'm sure Andy can do that in his rehab set up.

Yeah, I lived in Tampa for a few years, at the time I edc'd a BM in s30-v. Even that managed to get a little light surface rust spotting from being in my pocket during a hike on a blazing hot day. ( you could pretty much rub the rust off with your thumb though) ill give the 01 in a pocket sheath a shot. I really like the character 01 gets with use, but the pics of your SP are pretty classy too.
