0551 bliss

Ok - I got the knife yesterday. Quality is good (blade is slightly off center, and there is a touch of movement in the blade in the open and closed positions); ergonomics are superb; action is very smooth; very sharp. The detent is very strong however, but in reading this thread it seems the consensus is that it will ease up after some use. I hope so. It's a bit funny in that I can thumb flick it easier than I can open it with a slow thumb push against the stud. Odd.

DallasSTB,

If your 0551 has some play and is off centered with the blade further from the lockbar side when closed, like everyone I've seen that wasn't perfect, you re in luck. Use a Torxx T8, both the Kershaw keychain tool set and the Benchmade 'Blue Box' have them, to very slighly tighten (CW) the pivot screw. Try it - then turn more (CW) or less (CCW) as required. 'Just right', and the blade is centered but opens fairly easily - maybe not the flipper it was, but it will get easier with use. Too tight, and it won't open! A drop of RemOil helps, too. Great knife - congratulations!

You know what? I discovered that little trick yesterday. Having some familiarity with Sebenza-type framelocks, I wanted to try to adjust it myself. It worked! Now all I've got is about a millimeter of play in just about any position except the locked position. Still, this is really a darn good knife. I've adjusted my opening technique to have more "upward" than "outward" thrust, and that has made opening significantly easier. I can even pop it open with a thumbflick fairly easily. I've broken down about a dozen cardboard boxes and it still shaves. Onward...

Glad to hear you are happy! That 'trick' works. It took 1/4 turn CW to return the blade to center - and take out the slight play - of the 0551 you sent back to the local store, Mr. Wharn. Now it's perfect - and back in their case. Hmmm, maybe I need a third one...

My M390 bladed BM 755 MPR got warm the last time I cut up cardboard boxes with it. After resharpening it, I found my el-cheapo folding boxcutter the next time I needed to reduce a cardboard box. Handy tool - with it's replaceable blades. All I have to do now is find where I stowed those replacement blades...

You know, a 'good knife' is like the 'good scissors' your mother had when you were a child... too good for cutting just anything!

i really want the 551 or even just the 550 im willing to sell my BM 587-1 and my 940D2 LE 011/240 just to get some money in my pocket for the zt/hind its a sexy knife and i wants it

Speaking of a Para, I wish the 551 had the same FFG. I was actually thinking about that comparing the two recently. I agree...the 551 is absolutely amazing.

So after a few days of having one I am truly loving it. Just a quick question though. I am right handed but for some reason I am having some trouble opening the knife with my right hand. I can open it extremely easily using my left hand but when I try and open it in my right it has some resistance. Did anyone else experience anything like this? The knife is perfectly centered and all. Maybe I just need to break it in a little more?

Your fingers on the opposite side are compressing the blade by squeezing the lockbar. When the lockbar is on top (opening it with left hand), there is no such compression. One solution is to reverse the pocket clip, as it will cover the lockbar and provide a nice platform on which to rest your fingers. It also makes for a fuller grip. Of course, you'd have to be okay with carrying the knife tip-down.
