Beautiful Blade but where's the Quality Control?? This 1 of 1000 knives and I'm VERY surprised this was NOT caught. As seen in pictures there are cracks in the carbon fiber scale going left right. The cracks look faintly yellow (glue?) and are only in the middle of the scale (do not run to the edges), which makes me think the original CF blank was already damaged.

Although it's not overly visible, you can really feel it. If anyone in the QC department ran their hand the length of the scale no doubt they would feel it as the rest of the scale is super smooth. It's annoying because of how hyped I was about getting this knife. I'm bitchin about little stuff but at $400 (sebenza/strider prices) I'm expecting immaculate qc.

No need to make a thread to complain, we are all pretty tired of hearing people whine about any problem they find. Call them and let cs do what they do

ZT doesn't charge the $400+, retailers do.. So don't use the cost as a reason to complain... The time it took to take pics and make this thread you'd have someone on the phone and have it shipped out already. ZT has the best CS and are awesome to talk to. No company in infallible and don't see the point of making this thread...This is why many knife companies don't have forums.. you hear a hundred complains to every one compliment.

So does it cut?

I did phone them and am going to send it in. Surprised people are annoyed I pointed this out. If i bought a porsche and paint was flawed I'd probably point that out on the car forums as well. I'm not saying ZT Sucks don't buy from them because i'll probably buy other ZT knives. Will it probably be a warranty fix - I hope so, but not happy to have it out of my hands to find out.

Hold on.... im confused on why people are getting irritated over this. I think its totally reasonable to share your experience with any given knife or company wether it is good or bad. He isnt bad mouthing ZT knives he is just sharing his expectations. So in the future people should refrain from these kinds of threads?

Can anyone of you elaborate on why you think the OP is whining?

ar11, you're completely right to post about this. Disregard the people who ignored the problem and instead insulted you. As a couple of others have noted, Kershaw has excellent customer service and will fix it.

Thats the beauty of Kershaw's warranty/CS. They will make it right. Check back in with us when you get it back.

As far as I see it, as long as you make sure to post up a follow up statement if CS makes it right, it's a perfectly fair post.

Hi ar11 -

I am sorry to hear that you have a problem with your CBCF.

I am surprised to see that kind of crack, that carbon fiber is very strong stuff.

His first action should have been to call/contact customer service.
Then maybe his title would've been different.
Always better to think, rather than complain first.

Yeah, I'm glad the OP posted this as well. I don't see it as slandering Kershaw/ZT since it is true. ZT makes some of my favorite knives, and threads like these are one of the reasons I like ZT so much, because they pretty well always end up with KAI completey fixing any and all issues. Every company will have the occasional problem with a knife, as pointed out here, but seeing the company stand behind their product and warranty is what is impressive to me.

/\ Exactly...quit your bitching and whining and get to the solution...

No need to insult the guy.

Don't speak for me.

Of the last 20 brand new $100+ knives I've bought, 2 had serious flaws. FWIW, about half of the 20 were ZT/Kershaw and they were all perfect.

That's simply not true ... any more. 95+% of knife companies have facebook pages, and those pages have complaints posted. Also, regardless of whether a knife company has their own forum or forum section, their knives, their prices, and their customer service is widely discussed on dozens/hundreds of forums all over the internet. And that is a good thing too! It forces businesses to maintain quality and to provide good customer service. Also, it provides the business with invaluable feedback.

This is an ongoing debate. Some folks (and manufacturers) believe that if someone finds a problem with a knife, they should attempt to have the knife repaired/replaced before they air their dirty laundry. Then there are those who feel they're being of service by alerting others to a defect before they attempt to have their knife repaired/replaced. That way folks can check to see if it's a one-off or indicative of a more widespread problem. Which approach is correct? That all depends on who you ask. But if I didn't want to know the good, the bad, and the ugly, I probably wouldn't hang out here.

Actually although not stated in my original post I did call CS before posting and they did tell me to ship it in. Should I have titled it different? "CBCF AWESOME except for cracked scale" would that have softened the blow? I don't see how this post is much different than someone posting about awesome quality fit and finish. Anyhow I will follow up once i get it back from Kai with pics of course.

i dont understand why people are getting upset he is just pointing out a flaw. i would do the same thing in fact i have on multiple occasions and KAI has always made it right so point the flaw out and ship it back to them and wait very patiently for a few prolly 3-4 weeks and u will have it back good as new (well in your case better than new) i infact have been thinking about complaining i have 2 brand new ZTs in the box one is a 560 and other a 561 and they couldnt be more different knives one is silky smooth fast and solid the other is questionable. but i know if i wanted to id just send the questionable one in and they would fix it but it is just the nature of the beast everyone has quality issues. i am an HVAC tech and my company installs primarily TRANE equipment which is known as one of the best conventional systems and we have duds every once in a while and that is a multi-billion dollar company.

I for one am not irritated. I think its just as important for people to know the good and the bad. Last time I checked this wasnt the "fluff KAI's pillow forum". For me this brings to my attention certain quality control issues that this knife may have and it lets me know what to look out for if I buy one. Just know that some of us do appreciate posts like this. I have noticed though that some Kershaw and ZT fans are very very touchy about bringing up issues. If I had a crack in my handle like that you know darn well I would post it too. It cant all be praise. If Kershaw, ZT and its fans want a forum where no one is allowed to bring up quality control issues maybe there should be a separate forum for that purpose. Because this as I remember it used to be a forum on all things KAI. Not just a bunch of fanboys patting each other on the back. This isnt a case of someone bringing up "my detent is too weak/strong" or some other very old and tired issue that really is a matter of personal preference. The dudes handle has a crack in it. A pretty obvious crack. And maybe its a good thing people bring it up, in public no less. Because If it were my company it would get me to try and do a better job and talk to the people responsible for the error. I understand issues where if a knife breaks give the company a chance to make it right before you go postal with a public lashing. But when things like that leave the gate like that i appreciate the heads up.
