1-0 Gets It's First Taste Of Blood (somewhat graphic)

Well...admittedly it wasn't exactly what I had planned, but the 1-0 did get it's first taste of blood today none the less. I had my sights on a rabbit in some high grass until a pesky little squirrel decided to sneak up on me and start barking...causing me to start and give away my position. The squirrel paid a high price for his meddling into my affairs, and my youngest got her first lesson in how meat comes to be. Now all I need to do is get a couple more this weekend and I'll have enough for a good mess of fried squirrel and gravy or some squirrel stew :)

I haven't had a pot of squirrel stew since I was still in my teens, but it sure is appealing to me at the moment.

Well yeah...it's the first chance I've had to try it out on any game processing so yeah start to finish I used that "big ol' knife". Hopefully the next one will be of the larger variety :)

Glad your treasured blade is getting some good use!

Me too, hopefully soon it will get a little more, hopefully a little more at one time even. I haven't had any of my long guns out or gone hunting in some years now as I had reached a point where I felt like I had seen enough blood. But... this recession is putting things in a different perspective for me and I am remembering more of where I came from, and why things were the way they were back then. Figured if it is coming anyway that I might as well start the young one's education into reality early before any "preconceived" notions get a chance to develop. It was funny, when she saw me get out the cutting board she ran and sat in her chair at the table and said "you gonna cook it now?" She got mad when I told her it was going in the freezer until I got some more and told me to go get more.

Cool beans, I love to squirrel hunt, might be my favorite. Squirrels and iron sights  good shot  Chris

Mistwalker glad to see your Breeden 1-0 getting used on game. I got to use my Breeden warthorn on my Ohio bow kill buck. There is nothing that compares to spending time with your kids in the outdoors. My son is 23 now and I treasure our hunts together.

Hey Brian, that is very cool. Did it do as well as you thought it would?

I can hardly wait to try out several of the knives I have to do up this fellow

for some of the processing up of that young steer.

Again, that is cool you got to try out your 1-0 knife.

Mine too I think. I was taught to shoot by a 6 foot 3 inch 270 pound ex Marine who grew up in the depression. Once he had taught us how to shoot and had taken us hunting a few times, if we missed one shot we got back handed, if we missed a second shot there was no supper for us that night. I learned not to miss at a very young age :) . The cool thing about being far sighted, I will eventually need glasses to read but I can still clearly see the squirrels in the trees on the next ridge this time of year. It has been a while, but nice to know my reflexes and accuracy are still there.

Hi Mike, yeah, lol, I was hoping the first would be a little bigger but....

Yeah, she's four so I figured I better set the scene now before it gets to the point where I have problems from the input of the other kids in school and such.

Interesting skinning method.

It's easy, cut off the feet, tail, and head...make a small split in the back and just remove the skin like a pair of pants and a shirt. I'd have done it differently if for some reason i was trying to save the hide.

Bryan

Yep, did fine! Exactly as I expected it to do.

Lol, so far I've just got the one so it went in the freezer. However it's not too old and tough, the meat feel and looks good. Now I'll be going after a few more on purpose...and I'll probably find everything but squirrels.

pics or it didnt happen :D

Digital cameras didn't exist then and I didn't take my 35mm hunting with me :p

But, I did go buy a pocket knife after a couple of times of doing it. looking back I think I would likely have fared better with a sharp piece of flint but I was stubborn and refused to believe that a bigger knife wasn't always better till reality smacked me in the face a few times. That said, I'd still rather process a squirrel with a Bowie knife than fell a tree with SAK :D

if you've still got that bowie lying around you should use it the next time your processing some squirrel :D

I wish! I had had it for years but it was one of many thing to go in the task of funding a divorce and custody battle. It was worth it though, I won.

glad it turned out well for you. maybe you can try using that schrade you designed next time. i'd be interested in seeing how it would perform as its geared to be a survival knife.

Jeeeez now you've gone and made me feel like I'm batting zeros at the moment...but...while I had planned on doing just that, I sort of got caught up in a moment a few days ago and gave the one I had on hand to a friend's son who was home on leave before heading to Afghanistan...now I have to actually order one for myself. I did put it through enough tests to feel comfortable sending it with him though.

I do still have the original prototype.....
