1-0 Gets It's First Taste Of Blood (somewhat graphic)

Jeeeez now you've gone and made me feel like I'm batting zeros at the moment...but...while I had planned on doing just that, I sort of got caught up in a moment a few days ago and gave the one I had on hand to a friend's son who was home on leave before heading to Afghanistan...now I have to actually order one for myself. I did put it through enough tests to feel comfortable sending it with him though.

I do still have the original prototype.....

sorry mate :o

its more excuses to go prepare a squirrel feast :D

No worries man :)

Ya know...when I headed out today I had visions of rabbit hash running through my mind...since I got back i have been thinking about squirrel stew, fried squirrel with mashed potatoes and gravy with some candied carrots, squirrel roasted on a forked stick over the fire, even squirrel pot pie....I think I'll be hitting the woods more often over the next little while...

I want to ask you. I have never cleaned a squirrel in the manner you did. Do you find it easier to skin it when you have already taken the feet, head and tail off first? I have never tried doing it that way so I am curious.

Good on ya Mist. These days when I lay the sights down I'm lookin at the haunches not the horns. I love bein out with my boys too..I find that I enjoy takin them more than stalking alone. (old age must be sneakin up on me!) Your threads always have pics too..great pics. Best wishes anrkst

That is a new way of skinning to me as well. Very nice

Thanks glad I could teach something new

Like I said, a little slit in the back of the fir put two fingers in and pull apart...hide just comes off like pants and shirt...same method I use on rabbits...except when I want to keep the hide.

Hmmm, that sounds good too.

Thanks man...oh...I still have a ways to go before she could handle the quietness of actually stalking, she is still too easily excited by new things when she finds them. I figure I'll work on that more while we are on our hikes but I figured I had to start somewhere so I started with the more graphic lessons, and the eating of the meat. Then in time we'll work more on the subtleties of how it gets to that point.

Way to go on the squirrel!I'm trying to talk a coworker into selling me his old W49 Bowie, think he's getting closer to sell.I had one in the Marines, back in 81 or 82.But sadly, I traded it off, live and learn.

The steel in the old ones is awesome, and it was the best chopper I ever used.

Haven't had squirrel stew in a few months. Looks like you got a meaty one there

Yeah...with all the berries, fruit trees, (they seem to love the small pears on my pear trees) Oak, Walnut, and Hickory trees around here they stay pretty well fed :) . I'm not sure how I'm going to do the first ones since it's been so long...I'm caught between stew and fried with gravy on the side....decisions decisions lol.

Yummy !
I'm going to do a Wabbit today.
I miss squirrel. We have a few around here but not enough to harvest.

I have a couple of the older ones that are high carbon. They seem to sharpen up easy and hold an edge well. Haven't tried a squirrel or rabbit yet. Will have to get it out and bloody it up. Just something that I like about them. I do like the Breeden knife, well designed. Regards

Around here we have had a population explosion, plenty to harvest several and never hurt anything.

I loved the steel in the old ones...never tried the later stainless but heard some bad things about it.

Thanks, glad you like the design, I'm loving Bryan's execution of it.

Nice, what rifle?

Lol, I'm not sure...it has only a few small markings and none in English. Picked it up really cheap some years back and was told it was Yugoslavian or Romanian. It shoots great and has the same cleaning/tool kit in the stock as the old SKSs, and AKs, and has the same type front sights.

I just read the title of this agian and had a thought. I wonder how many people think I cut myself lol.
