I pay the moment I win an auction. Of my last 3 wins, 2 of them didn't go smoothly. In all cases I paid immediately and awaited shipping.

One of them never sent me anything. Guy (I assume) had over 1000 positive feedbacks and was definite knife dealer. Two emails, no response. I eventually asked ebay to intervene, guy didn't contact me after that, I got the money back.

Today, I received something I won. The box is correct but the knife is wrong. Also the knife is worth about half what the one I paid for is worth. I am pretty sure the guy made an honest mistake (I just noticed someone won auction on the knife I received, same brand, similar box size, etc). I sent him an email just a couple of minutes ago so I don't expect a reply yet.

I have bought maybe 40 things on ebay before and never had a problem. I have tried to buy about, hmmm, 5-6 knives on ebay and 2 problems...Is this just the odds catching up to me or are knives just riskier purchases on ebay?

If you are wondering why I don't use a dealer, the knives I buy off of ebay have been discontinued and you have to take them where you can get them.

I've bought near 50 knives on ebay and there was one mistake. But I try to deal with top-rated sellers.

the one that never responded to me, even after I contacted ebay, was a top rated seller. Was definitely a knife dealer, has a store, etc.

I've bot a LOT of knives from eBay. In fact I buy a lot of shtuff in general from there, and in all of my transactions, I only ever had one go wrong. The guy never sent me the product, and it was under 20 bucks so I wasn't even covered for protection/refund. Lame. Sounds like you've just been having a string of bad luck lately though. At least you got your money back that one time. In any event, I'm sure you already do, but just make sure you're cautious of who you buy from. Sorry for the bad news. Those kinds of hassles are never fun.

I am wondering why this is in a knife discussion forum. :D.

I think I've only ever had 2 purchases that initially didn't go well.

In one case, I'd received a Case Tony Bose Sowbelly Stockman (3 blades), when in fact, the knife pictured in the listing was a 5-blade version (and the written description referred to the 3-blade). I even sent an email to the seller immediately upon buying it, to confirm that it was in fact the 5-blade. He sent me a reply something non-specific like '...everything's good, top-notch'. So I crossed my fingers and waited. Sure enough, he sent me a 3-blade. I was furious. To his credit, he immediately refunded my money (including the shipping), and I sent it back. In that case, I think it was just a case of posting the wrong pic (5-blade) by accident.

In the other case, I'd bought a cheap ($10 or so) fishing knife, and shortly after I'd paid for it, I noticed that the seller was 'no longer an eBay member' (yikes!). This was BEFORE I'd received anything for my payment. As it turned out, the seller's eBay account had been hacked by somebody, and eBay shut it down to protect the seller. A temporary problem (a week or so), but not the seller's fault. He did finally sort things out and make good on my purchase.

Aside from those two (out of a hundred or more transactions), I've not had any issues.

Did you leave him feedback?

I waited to see if I got my money back. I bought through paypal and was going to wait until everything was resolved. I got my money back (this was after about 3 weeks, from my purchase, waited about 10 days for a response, then contacted ebay and that took like 1.5 to 2 weeks to resolve). When I received my money, the item showed up under my items that I needed to pay for, so I removed that from the list and that removed my ability to leave feedback. Weird system.

I checked that seller, and somebody else has left feedback very similar to what my situation was on a very similar knife. However, the dealer has had numerous positive feedbacks since then. It was really odd, he never responded to a single email from what I can tell.
