1 Of 300. . . . . ??????? . . . . . . Huh????. . . . . What's Happening?????

My knowledge will have to go with the above statement. City laws are different than the what the state laws "imply". San Jose allows a 3 inch folder but Oakland restricts it to 2 1/2 inches. My understanding for my city San Jose, is that there is no restriction on fixed blade length but the entire package must be visible...From handle butt to sheath tip. Of course once I hit the National Forest all bets are off and I'm got a 44 mag and a full size Busse strapped to my waist with or with out a jacket covering it!!

Actually, I don't believe that San Jose has any additional restrictions on knives. I've looked at the municipal code several times (and also the Santa Clara county ordinances), and I haven't found anything. If you have a reference, please post it. What you stated sounds like the kind of thing that a LEO might tell you and unfortunately, many times what they say is not a statement of the law as much as their opinion about what is reasonable.

Yes that 's correct, the information I have is from a lawyer and a handful of police officers that I know. And you are most certainly correct, you do get different answers from officers. I've heard 3 1/2 inches for folders, 3 inches, and the rule of thumb "Is it longer than the palm of your hand?". But to honest, since it's the police officer's descretion and interpretation that you most typically have to deal with on the street, I'd much rather hear from "them" what they think. Yes I know that you can argue it, fight it in court, but having done such things in the past I have found that even if you win you lose (lots of money!). So I guess it's all about what length (pardon the pun) that you are willing go to (or through) to carry what the actual written law describes. "What do I feel that I can get away with today, after all I know what the law is!" I found that kind of thinking can lead a person to trouble they weren't counting on.

I have a copy of the Ca legal conceal carry law but I believe you were asking about the local laws. Like I said, they do differ. Hope that helps....good luck and I agree, it's a drag not feeling comfortable wearing a fixed blade knife. Laws or dirty looks, they both add to the reason why I carry a folder.

Keep a copy of you Municipalities Laws that pertain the question with you. Folded in your wallet, in the glove box of your vehicle. Exercise YOUR right to carry what you legally can. I HATE the "palm of your hand" clause.....I hear it more from civilians on the street than actual LEOs.
