10 items for 1 year in the bush.

1. Busse FBM w/sharpener
2. Busse AD w/sharpener
3. 36" bow saw w/ extra blades
4. cooking/water pot
5. Heavy sleeping Bag
6. A good, heavy tent or tipi
7. fishing line w/ hooks
8. a couple ferro rods
9. Ruger 10/22 with 1000 rds
10. as much paracord as possible

That covers food, warmth and shelter.

During Canada in winter firewood will go quick. The saw is to take down trees and the FBM to split wood. I almost switched the FBM out for an axe though...the axe would make spliting ALOT easier...but the FBM is more versatile...choices choices

i'm looking at this more in terms of a Thoreau type of thing, willingly living off the land minimalistically, as opposed to a lost in the woods type of thing. if i had a year, i could walk or swim out of just about anywhere...;P

i would be setting up a fairly permanant camp somewhere, with a midsize, built for comfort shelter and most likely develop regular foraging/hunting/fishing routes.
i would take:

midsize axe, roughly 25 inch handle, 2 lb head
midsize fixed blade, roughly 5 inch blade
small folding knife, something like a whittler or stockman pattern
edible plant ID book
fish/snare/sewing kit (all one little pouch for my possible bag)
100 meters paracord
sharpening kit (med arkansas stone, strop)
heavy wool blanket
extra clothing/bits of cloth for patches
bit brace and a couple of auger bits

optimally i would be carrying a few more things, since this would be an on purpose situation

i would add
pot+pan
proper hunting/trapping gear
tarp or something to make shelter building easier
proper log construction tools (felling axe, shaping axe, adze, saw, etc)
some sort of food to buffer unexpected emergencies; rice, beans, dried meat maybe

Hatchet
kitchen knife
Sleeping bag
tent
metal can
firestarter
jounal book and pen

added (since I'm not to ten yet):
1 gallon of Dr Bonners soap

1. Machete
all else is bonus :) I can use it to cut vies and leaves to make cordage , to cut poles to make a hut frame , to cut brush or grass for thatch .It doubles as a draw knife to carve a bow or spear and woomera , its a crude and unweildy tool to carve a coolamon to carry water with but it works , the back of it gets burred and dinked up when its used to strike flint to make sparks for fire lighting , but it can be used to make the gear for a firebow as well , or even a firesaw ,if Ive allready made a woomera , I got my firesaw right there .
Makes a dandy machete too ....

2. water bottle . beats carving a coolamon , but I can if I have to
3. properly trained dog . makes hunting SO much easier .
4 .tarp . I am not a fan of thatching if I can avoid it .
5. sleeping bag
6. knife , small fixed blade , makes game cleaning and dressing easier than doing it with a machete .
7. firesteel
8. pliers great for holding the pot if its got no handle , good for liberating fence wire to make illegal game snares on roo pig and goat paths thru fences make a OK impromptu hammer , are an invaluable tool when begining neo tribal metal working , good for removing things like serious splinters from flesh ( BTDT) heaps of uses
9 .cooking pot
10. wife .

For long-term camping you'll want a natural fiber canvas tent, as opposed to a nylon or other synthetic tent.

1) bow-saw.
2) shovel with full-length handle.
3) large cooking pot.
4) small cooking pot.
5) 500 feet of 550 cord.
6) fire-steel.
7) multi-tool (Leatherman Blast for me).
8) large container of Tylenol.
9) Ruger .357 magnum
10) box of 200 bullets (75 Speer Gold Dot 125g JHP, and 75 CCI .38/.357 shot-shells, and 50 tracer bullets)

It would be really nice to have a tent, sleeping-bag, poncho, and tarp also, but the limit is 10 items.

22 rifle and one brick of shells
My Estwing Ax
My Nessie.
Good Tarp
Para cord and or rope.

5. huge mag block/firesteel combo
6. first aid kit
7. 10/22 + ammo

After reading all the posts so far and compiling a best of, I would take:

3. Swedish firesteel.
4. A small camp kitchen, frying pan, big pot, utensils.

For in Northern Michigan.

1. Axe
2. Laplander Saw
3. Sharpening system
4. Wool Blanket
5. Tarp
6. Parachute cord As much as I am allowed.
7. Pot
8. Knife- up to a 4 inch blade fixed.

Good thread.

I thought there needed to be a male too! I guess forgot about the Birds and the bees.:D

Some people have mentioned tents.

Since it is for one year, do you think it is a better idea to build a semi-permanent shelter out of wood?

Looking at others lists, does a gun and ammo count as one or two items?
Same with fishhooks, does 1 fishhook count as one item? Fish hooks and line count as one or two? Does one cartridge count as one item?

Just wondering. :)

I would agree with some about having the Henry .22 lever action. Here is my list of goodies, kind of easy seeing as how I just finished reading "Hatchet" and "Brian's Winter" last week, which took about three days to finish the two. Learned a few things too, well here goes:

1. Henry .22 lever action with a brick of LR ammo
-easier to hunt with than a bow (for me at least)
-Good for small game and big game with a head shot
2. Fixed blade (my SOG Field Pup, mainly because it is my new belt knife)
-good for almost any small task
-skinning animals
-filleting fish
-whittling
3. Multi-tool (my SOG Powerlock)
-contains saw and file
-scissors
-everything else I need
4. Folding pocket knife (my new Buck 286 cause I'm not afraid to use it:D)
-ease of use
-one handed in case of emergency
-small tasks
5. Hatchet (Gerber Hatchet for me 'cause that is what I have and used)
-chopping wood
-splitting wood
-woodwork
6. Diamond sharpener
-keep those blades sharp and they'll last forever
7. Magblock
-starting fire
-lasts a really long time
8. Fishing kit with 50lb test
-catching fish (of course)
-setting traps for "wabbit stew"
-use string for other purposes
-50lb spiderwire which is thin but extra strong fishing string
-medical purposes/sewing thread
9. Metal pot
-used for boiling water
-making stew/broth
-store water
-makes a lot of noise if you hit with the back side of your knife :D
10. Paracord
-useful for lots of things
-bow string when the rifle runs low
-clothing line for the spring and summer months
-setting up shelter
-repairing pack (assuming you go in with all of this in a pack)

I would have included a tarp, but I've seen several people survive without them, but mainly because It didn't fit the "10" that was in the guidelines. Hopefully with this I'll survive for a year, J.

What are the differences between a woomera and an atlatl? Any good books on Australian bushcraft that would cover things like the woomera and coolamon?

I would think that a pack of hooks would be one item, just as a box of ammo would be one item.
I don't think that anyone buys a single hook or a single bullet.

Solar panel generator
Freezer
1 whole cow
365 gallons of clean water
100 lbs frozen vegetables
50inch plasma TV
Satelite reciever
Large sebenza
electric blanket.
4 season tent

Excellent thread. I’m going to assume you already have clothing appropriate for where your going, a pack, and that there is fresh water somewhere near where you are.

I've spent much time considering things like this, however, the bottom line is that it changes where you’re going. I haven’t seen many people mention a water filter, were you planning on boiling all your water?

general list:
1. 10/22
2. Medium sized axe
3. Leatherman multi-tool, surge
4. Mag block with Fire steel with a peice of a hacksaw blade for a striker
5. Medium sized titanium pot, with a handle
6. Sleeping bag, western mountaineering, what model depending on where I’m going.
7. A 50 pack of 35 gallon trash bags, if that counts as 50 items, a hugh tarp.
8. Brick of ammo
9. As much 550 para cord as I can call 1 item. 500 feet would be ideal.
10. 50lb bag of rice.

I’d really like to take 15 items because then you can really cover what you need. I would add:

11. A good closed cell sleeping pad
12. A diamond sharpening stone
13. A pack of fishing hooks
14. A book on survival, including edible plants
15. A good shake flashlight

20 items and you could really live in luxury.

A few important items that everyone seems to have missed is a toothbrush and at least 1 change of clothes and extra socks. Granted theyre not as critical as some other items, but it'd make a big difference having them.
