My apologies if this has been done 100 times before, but I 'm a new guy and I can't search.

If you had $100 to spend on ONE knife to be your hunting/camping/backpacking/end of the world blade, what would you buy?
Here are the restrictions I would like to place on your suggestions:

1. Fixed blade
2. Production model available today on the market (unless you know a custom knife that meets the $100 requirement)
3. Blade length somewhere around 3 to 6 inches

Your suggestions welcome

I think the Short Kabar would be good.
You could buy one, and Fiskars hatchet and sharpening tools and stay within your 100 bucks.

BRKT has lota stuff that fills the bill . You got lots of choices .

Of course I love Busse, Swamp Rat, and Scrap Yard knives but if you want a production model available today I hear the Fallkniven F1 is pretty darn good.

Get an F1 and for the change on the C-note you get a Swedish army firesteel to go with it. Light and very tough and works very well. The F1 is totally comparable to knives three times more expensive.

How to start a fire with a F1 a firesteel and a piece of fatwood (thank you Dennis C).
First cut some small curls and some small pieces with the sharp end of the knife.
Turn the knife over and scrape some even smaller curls (or shavings) with the back. This does not work with an LMF II.
Place the end of the firesteel in the middle of the finest curls.
Shave the firesteel with the knife BACK slowly three times. No sparks.
Then scrape the firesteel with the knife BACK fast to get sparks.
The small pile of firesteel scrapes ignites the shavings and.... you will have hot tea in notime.
I left out the pile of firewood you also need, but that is obvious.

Good luck with your knife choice.

hunting/camping/backpacking/end of the world blade

RAT4, RAT6, Ranger RD4, Ranger RD6, Fallkniven F1
Fallkniven S1, Ranger RD7, any Bark River (BRK&T) you find in your price range
that meets your needs.

I like the Fallkniven S1 a lot; think it's a great all around blade

I have to second the BM Nimravus suggestion at GP Knives ($109)

Also have to second the Bark River knives at Kinfesupply, though I think I might take a Candian Special (listed as simply "Canadian" at that website): Ivory, Black, or Green Micarta $103.

If the premise is a $100 fixed blade, why are people suggesting knives between $100-$120?

I think that someone looking for the right product would want to know what's available in their price "range"...
then they always have the option of saying "I'm sticking to $100.00 firm", or moving off that price somewhat

I don't own one but I hear that a Koster Bushcrafter can be had for that price and there is very little it can't do.

Yeah, I'm comfortable going somewhat over that figure, but my premise in asking the question is that $100 should be able to get a very good knife. I have a bunch of folders that cost more that that, but I don't think I have a single fixed blade in that price range. I am spending a bunch of time on the trail here lately and I want a good fixed blade for the woods instead of the folders I carry every day.

only one knife eh? Well, probably this one, will be available soon, and Scrapyards can take alot of abuse:

if that's not quite production enough, then I'd spend a tad more and get a Benchmade Nimravus: http://www.newgraham.com/detail.aspx?ID=4998

I'm not stupid (I promise---I have tests to prove it) but when I click on their purchase link all I get is the opportunity to buy sheaths and T shirts---no knives. Could that be a Mac thing, or is their store not working, or am I doing something wrong? I know the link says this model won''t be up for sale until tomorrow, but none of the other knives seem to be available in the store.
