I recommend an Ontario RAT 3 or the RAT RC-3. I have the Ontario and it is a superb knife and a good value. It isn't too big but I'm not into chopping with knives. You should have enough left over for a nice Silky folding saw. If you want bigger look at the TAK or RAT 5.
Nice thing about the RAT 3 is it can be carried with the Tec-lock attached or a clip or with 550 as a neck knife. I typically use the clip for easy on and off with the sheath under my belt and clip.
Something with a full tang vs. a rat tail or half tang or false tang. Ooops, I just knocked out some of the previous choices, sorry 'bout that. Something light enough to carry 24/7 without a sore spot on your hip (or where ever). Something sturdy enough for most rational knife jobs with the understanding you use the hatchet, the ax or the chain saw for the big cutting and chopping work. The Scrap Yard knives are here.., http://www.scrapyardknives.com/knives.htm I'd also look at the Cold Steel GI Tanto and some of their other selections. My personal choice for knife work is about 5" but yours may vary. [The 5" is adequate 90% - 95% of the time and the ax or the gun will very nicely work for that 5-10% the 5" knife doesn't handle.]
