1000th post giveaway contest

Giving this thread one last gentle bump, just in case anyone else wants to get in. So far, I think we have seven actual entries (plus some great non-entry pics!).

All the best,

- Mike

Great contest!

A bit of a different take, but here is my preferred trio of W&SS tools, shown here during my Continental Divide Trail thru-hike:
  • Murray Carter wharncliffe neck knife
  • Silva Explorer compass that I've had since I was 3rd grade
  • Guidebook/maps (guidebook changed monthly, maps changed daily)

On these longer trips, I love getting settled into the rhythms of the trail after the first few weeks, and having my essential geal rattle into it's naturally-functional "just so" place. The stuff I really need is kept at hand, while the stuff I thought I'd need settles quietly to the bottom of the pack.

Great stuff, tradja!

I like the idea of alternate forms of 'trios', based on what you use for your hike. I also carry my compass around my neck (well, actually, as a zipper fob on my jacket), especially when I'm enjoying some cross-country snowshoeing. Keeps it right at hand.

All the best,

- Mike

And the winner (by random selection, using the sophisticated 'write names on scraps of paper and pull out of a cup after shaking gently' method) is ...

MBTull.

Congrats, man!

Send me your contact info, and I'll send you the Alpha. You can leave it in a message on my profile page, or - if you're a fan of privacy - leave a message with your email addy, and I'll get in touch with you about the address. Alternatively, stop by tonight's chat and pass me your email address there. I hope you enjoy the knife as much as I have!

Thanks to everyone who posted trios - there are some excellent combos here. I love the classic look of veubent's selection, the Barkie goodness shown by Big Mike, the huge variety of 'choppers' shown by tonym, and tradja's decision to eschew an extra knife in favour of including some navigation gear. It being a Sunday afternoon, though, I'm particularly partial to kgd's excellent observation that a good trio might reasonably include a pint of the good stuff. So, I'm off to the LCBO before this evening's chat! (sorry if I forgot anyone here).

Cheers to W&SS! I look forward to my next 1000 posts.

All the best,

- Mike

Mike, what I really want to know is where you find an LCBO open at 6:43 pm on a Sunday night????

Doc

Funny you should mention that, Doc: I didn't!

I had to run out for some groceries anyway, and I was dismayed to find the LCBO long closed. Sigh. I need to pay closer attention to their operating hours.

Keen eye!

All the best,

- Mike (who is currently trying to enjoy the Sunday forum chat while sipping coffee and eating granola. A poor substitute for beer).

Mike, if it helps, I'll have one for you. How about a Creemore Springs Premium Lager (just cracked it)?

Doc :D

Mentor,

Thank you for your give away. I posted my address on your profile page. This is a generous gift and congratulations on your 1K post.

I can scarcely wait to retire my Ozark Trails "Wally World Special." Let me know if you want it, I will happily forward it to you, tennis racket tape and all. My low-rent Nessmuk trio has just taken a big step up, from Baltic to Ventnor for you Monopoly fans.

Thanks again,

Marc
