Ha! No, that would have been good, Mark. I counted again and get 23: 3 green books, 3 red, and 1 blue on the top shelf; 4 red and 4 blue on the middle shelf; and 4 green and 4 red on the bottom shelf. I think that's 23.

Mark, I also originally counted only 21. But then I realized that I missed 1 book "in the shadows" at the right end of each of the top two shelves. (I originally thought they were part of the shelf.)

Upon closer inspection, I may even see part of a 24th book on the right side of the bottom shelf. When I zoom in it seems like there is a thin sliver of a red book spine, but it's questionable, and I'm sticking with 23!

Vince, you got me zooming in on the illustration, and now I'm backing off to my original count of 21. I'm quite convinced that the "books" I saw at the far right end of the top and middle shelves are actually the "inside" of the vertical board making up the right side of the bookshelves' frame.

Have to respectfully disagree. I can see the decoration on the spine of those books. Maybe I will take a better picture when I get home tonight. But the picture does not show the whole bookcase, just as it does not show all of the desk. I will see if I can get a good close-up with good focus.

In particular, I failed to notice the "fancy" woodwork on the left side of the bookcase, and I didn't notice that the yellow vertical line I was seeing as an edge of an essentially unfinished board on the right side of the bookcase was not part of the bookcase at all, but was part of the black and gold frame of the picture. Interesting experience illustrating how perspective can change what one sees!

So no more argument from me, but I do not object to Will's suggestion of a drink to enrich the counting experience!

In particular, I failed to notice the "fancy" woodwork on the left side of the bookcase, and I didn't notice that the yellow vertical line I was seeing as an edge of an essentially unfinished board on the right side of the bookcase was not part of the bookcase at all, but was part of the black and gold frame of the picture.
