1066VIK Winner - Contest - Ugly Stuff or Good Stuff? - Need your Opinions

The grain structure and hardness are a lot like natural Koa. It get's a similar flash as well.
Colors can be kind of weird as well. Ranging from a light gold, to mustard yellow, olive green and black.
Best finish with this stuff is an oil finish.

Stacy guessed correctly with myrtle.

Gunstock makers pay a premium for this wood. Furniture makers and wood turners really like it as well.
I really think with the knife makers it comes down to what looks best. These are pretty mediocre pieces.
If I cut some I will try to get some with really good figure and sell the rest to the wood turners. They tend to buy it just for the name. Gets a really nice lustre when finished.

It looks to me that it has a fair amount of chatoyancy and that it will probably look better in person than it will in the photos, which may make selling it online difficult.

Here is a photo of a typical piece of Myrtle with normal colors and a bit of figure.

Myrtle wood is not a wood I have ever been really excited about but it seems some people like it.
Sometimes I see a piece I really like, but not really often.

That is why I am asking you guys. Not everyone likes the same stuff I do.

Example, the diagonal cut Black Palm.
When I got it I thought it was ugly and put the box on a shelf. I accidently sold a few pieces and found out people like it. Now it is all gone except 1 piece. Shows you what I know, ...................or don't.

I like it, but I think it would come down to be either all dark, like the three similar blocks in the first post,
or like the center section in this block.

Leadfoot

I like it, but wonder like others how stable it is, or how hard a wood to work or streange quirks to know. . Might work well to offer an introduction - let makers try it and comment. If it works, word will spread. Good luck, like in general how you do business.

Personally I like it, not every knife needs to have a supper fancy handle on it and going with something more subdued will let the work on the steel stand out more. I find that the blocks you posted have nice grains and from my experience the camera never does the wood justice, put those suckers in some natural light and move them around and I am sure they come to life.

Stacy beat me to my guess of Myrtle. I like the bottom two. The top two are OK but may be a bit plain.

I like it - depending on stability, it might make a good handle material for knives that don't have to be "fancy".

I like it - I think it'd make a nice compliment to a darker more fully figured wood in a multi wood handle.

We lost internet for our whole area yesterday.
Just got it back.

Got the package today - Thanks!
In addition to the 4 blocks I got, there were 5 1x1x6 turning blanks for my wife -- she was very pleased and surprised!
personally, I think the wood looks better in hand than the pictures.
My wife, who does some wood carving and turning, was impressed with the color and figure as well.
she especially liked the fact that it had an atypical color and "texture" from most Myrtle that's seen.
Thanks again!
