110 Question: S30V Version

I have not had a large amount of experience with Buck Knives; my purchases tend to be primarily Spydercos, Benchmades, Bark Rivers, and, now, Doziers. I have an old 110 lockback (who doesn't? :D) with the 420HC blade and wood scales, and it's a solid knife with a reliable lock. I've seen the new S30V version with the rosewood handle scales and was wondering if anyone could foster an opinion---this seemed like the place to come. For about $60, I don't think my money could be spent wrong on a 110 with an S30V blade by Mr. Bos.

Thanks for the help.

God bless you, America, and our men and women overseas.

KATN,

I with you... they're available at Cabella's. Don't know why Buck doesn't offer the S30V blade under its own brand. That being said, I do cherish my 110 in humble, ordinary, much-dissed 420HC... it takes a scary sharp edge with little effort.

Buck at least knows how to heat treat their 420 stainless! It's always been reliable for me.

For the record, the S30V 110 makes an appearance only on Cabela's website, www.cabelas.com, or in their Master Catalogues (check the Spring/Fall 2006, Spring 2007, and Fall Preview 2007, which are all the most recent).

s390v was created as a knife blade steel
and one at 60 is a good price !
you will find it is a tad harder to free hand sharpen
it does hold a edge for a longer time
i still use a 420hc my self for every day use ...

The S-30V from Bos is some of the sharpest blade steel i've had,Mine was my primary hunting knife,I will have another one shortly.

You won't be disappointed. I've had mine for about a year. Came out of the box wicked sharp (and flawlessly ground), on par or better than anything I've ever had from Spyderco.

S30V takes some patience to sharpen, but it holds its edge. Don't sharpen it too thin because it does tend to chip.

It's a beautiful knife but I wish they'd offer it without the coating and without that silly logo. S30V is already extremely corrosion resistant, why coat it (or why coat ANY stainless actually?).

Thank you for your help, I'm planning on ordering one in the next few weeks or picking one up if I stop in the Dundee location up to St. Clair.

I've actually had CPM S30V corrode on my surprisingly easily on me in the form of a Spyderco Military serated edge and a combo-edge Spyderco Chinook; both had never seen the rain but I carried both knives in the summer when the humidity was high around here. I was amazed that little corrosion spots started popping up around the SpyderHoles even though I was so careful to keep them from water.

I suppose that's why they're called "stain-less" instead of "stain-free".

Again, thanks for all the help & info. It was much appreciated.

God bless you, America, our Allies, and our men and women overseas.

For the asking price, the Alaskan Guide 110 simply cannot be beat.

The fit-and-finish and craftsmanship is easily just as good as that of my Custom Shoppe 110.

Yup... just like that. If I'm remembering the story correctly, didn't you want BG-42 for that knife and they were out and offered you an extra S30V Cabela's blade instead?

It's a beauty.

You have a great memory! :D That's exactly what happended. And for next to nothing, I have a great EDC 110.

I am seriously ticked off with Cabela's. They refuse to ship any knives to Canada, quoting some nonsense about it being against the law. I guess they never heard anything about NAFTA.

I was just about ready to head over to the Cabela web site until I read this thread. I agree that this is a majorly stupid thing, though I did recall reading on the Canadian connection that some Cabela knives were seized at the border. Canada Customs is likely the bad guy here.

Seeing that you live in Mission the smart thing for you to do is get the knife shipped to a buddy across the border, or set up a US post box in Blaine Washington (chances are one of your friends or neighbours has one already).
