110 Thumb Openers

I have two that I've been using for ... years. I just move them from knife to knife as needed. Unfortunately, I used to have three. I stripped the tiny allen screw in the third and it's never leaving a knife I don't use.

This is where I got my chinese copies (didn't know that till I got them!).

I haven't put one on anything yet so I can't vouch for the quality but they appear solid.

http://www.discountcutlery.net/ Search for "stud" and it will come up, $1.40 each is cheap enough.

Thank you all for the advice and suggestions.... I just ordered a handful of thumb studs from this site, along with a filet knife I've been meaning to order to replace one I gave away. Once they get here I will report on how they work.

Interesting note - the studs from SMKW are item # MI130 = from Discount Cutlery they are item # MI139.... I wonder who actually makes the studs for SMKW ????

An earlier version I had and have used well (still to this day) was made in Canada. I think that was a true "One Armed Bandit" and cost me a bit more.

I haven't had a need to put any of these on anything yet. However, if they work they are a good deal (besides being chinese). They look good at first inspection. Only difference I recall seeing is not noticing any "loc-tite" on the screw but that's an easy fix.

I think I may ship one to Decafe Dave as part of a deal and I'll let him give his opinion on them. He knows much more about these Buck things that I.

As has been noted in posts here previously, it seems all one has to do is discuss an item here and it invariably shows up for sale shortly thereafter (we are know where). So now we have thumb studs for sale, shown attached to a Buck 110 no less as an example.

Might try writing to the manufacturer of the Original One-Arm Bandit knife opener. The correct size needed for a 110 is the "Standard" model -- for blades up to 1/8" -- and they are made in Canada.

Don't know if they are still in business but the address is:

Y.B. Technology
P.O. BOX 65, Snowdon Station
Montreal, Quebec
CANADA H3X 3T3

Think I'll try also.
Good luck!

Dan

Man I'm beginning to wish i never heard of thumbstuds.
massivgoods on ebay sells them. I emailed them regarding shipping they say "they are light and small so we'll charge you just the shipping for one" which their calculator says is 4.99$ So i bid on and buy three. Then they send me an invoice for 8.99 shipping! I email them quoting their quoted price, then they send me an invoice for $14.97$ shipping!
I just emailed them again, right now i just want to pay them and get clear of them and just avoid doing business with them in the future!
Anybody else have problems with them or is it just me?

I've been buying on ebay for years and this is really only the second time i've had any kinda trouble with an ebayer.

Hmmm so massivgoods went from quoting me a 4.99$ total shipping price, then after the sales jacked it up to 8.99 then up to 14.97 now back down to 10.96$ The last three price changes occurred in the last few hours. At this point if they go back to 8.99 i'll consider it a done deal pay them and avoid them like the plague in the future.
This is kinda bugging me. Hmmm ebay has a "dispute console" function?
Anybody here use it?
I'm still hoping this is a glitch and the guy will turn out to be an ok dude.

tholiver,

Did you read post #23????? Those studs he is selling are the same ones you can get for 1.40ea!!!! I also bought 3 X 5.99 = 17.97:eek::rolleyes:. Oh well my bad. You bought 3 X 4.99 = 14.97...do the math and read this entire thread...you could have had them for 1.40ea.

The 3 studs I got will fit a blade up to 3/16" thick. IMHO these look stupid with a large gap between the stud and blade. This is not the sellers fault it's mine. I also paid the higher price because I did not know about the discount supply store. Live and learn...and next time I buy studs that fit the 110 blade;).

I added a pic of an older stud -VS- new large opening stud

Yeah they are only 1.97 plus 24$ minimum shipping charge from that website (i'm in Canada), so thats 29.01 total.
The guy on ebay said he'd only charge me 4.99 shipping. The winning price on the three thumbstuds was 3.24 each. So it should have been 3.24 X3 + 4.99=14.71. Thats half the price if i bought it at the other place.
But now the ebay seller i i bought from is saying 20.71$ total.
Grrrrr.

The pics of the ones i bought don't look as big as the ones in your pic. The pic in the ebay listing shows them on a 110.
Hopefully they are the smaller ones and not the big ones.
I'm going to hold off paying til i hear back from him.

That's the same guy i bought them from. The pic's of the stud is on a knife...so you don't see the big gap between the blade and the back of the stud:(. Ask him if they fit up to a 3/16" blade. I thought they were going to be smaller also...from the pic....But...not.

I just received one from massivgoods. The price was low and the shipping cost to Australia reasonable by most standards. Delivery was reasonably fast. Came through customs without a hitch.

It works but is not the most elegant thing I have seen. Like a few other posters have mentioned, the gap at the back is large and they are obviously designed for a knife with a very thick blade. Not really a great fit on the 110 which is hardly a mini knife - it makes you wonder what they were designed for.
