I have two. One new in the box, for the collection. One bought cheap with a broken blade.
I sent it to Buck for a new blade, I begged for a different blade to make it a one of a kind. I really wanted a drop point. They installed a standard 110 blade.
Makes a nice knife to pocket carry when I'm in dress pants. My wife cringes when I put a 110 sheath on my belt with my suit. LOL!
This knife brings back a memory of my father. I was wanting a standard 110, like his. He wanted a finger groove. So I made a deal, I bought his early 110 for retail so he could kick in the extra $5 to get the finger groove.
Then he saw the 111, I could tell he was in love. While he compared the two, I drooled on the Buck master survival knife in the glass case.
In the end he got the fingergroove 110 over the 111 because he thought being metal it might "stick" to his hands when ice fishing if his hands were wet. Like a tounge on a flag pole.
The prices were $32 $37 and $55 if I recall. The Buck master was high enough that it wasn't even obtainable on my income. This was in 1983 at a knife store in a big mall.
The engraving on the 111 is pretty gaudy, but in a good way, and a product of the time. This was the era of the Rhinestone cowboy after all.
I think a new 111 with harder scales without engraving would be a hit for sure.
