Some have asked, how do you slim them down...so I thought I would show the progress of this Buck project...

Here is my willing subject :

I grabbed these shots with one side fresh off the disc sander to show just how much metal I remove...

I'll do the other side likewise on the disc, then I move on to the hand forming stage later...

So now I have all four bolsters roughed in with the sanding disc, and it's on to the hand sanding...
not a real expensive set up here ! ;)

I use a rocking, and sweeping type of sanding strokes with moving the knife back and forth across the paper to achive a nice rounded contour to the bolsters...

Then it's time to knock out the pins and remove the scales...

IMG_2279.jpg

Of course, new scales will be needed to replace the destroyed ones...

IMG_2283.jpg

But first I must cut the rocker bar pin and pein it to the frame...

Then the blade will be removed and a new pin installed and peined, to replace the strength that was removed by grinding it down, if not the bolsters WILL spread the very first time the knife gets sharpened or has any lateral force applied to the blade...

Awesome!!

This is great - thanks Sit! I love the pocket-melt treatment!

Thanks for the great how-to - might be fun to buy an old beater on the bay and try this out!

Yes! An old beater is the perfect way to start...if it comes out nice you can always put a better blade in it later ;)

Quick question Duane would you be willing to slim down my Favorite knife for me fair warning it is a stag handled knife ?

Just curious sitflyer. Why did you have to remove the wood handles? I do like the look of the slim down. Very nice.

Gonna put different wood on it, and without gluing at this point they will loosen and come off eventually.

Here's my progress report :
got the blade out, and added African Blackwood scales,
Spent many hours shaping these scales and getting the form to where I wanted it,
this wood is very dense so it's been slow going!

now it's time to put in a blade :) and final sand and buff

I got up early this morning to beat the heat, and got 'er done :D

A quick tally tells me that about 16 hours of labor went into this project.

With the new blade installed, and adjusted the height (had to lower the point into the well ) it was time to sand off the heads of the peined pivot pin. Then on to final sand and buff...
