112 Ranger Sport Love Club?

Update;

I called the Buck warranty department, to see if this is the new normal.
Or if it is an anomaly.

Got put on hold and eventually the recording said no one was available leave a message.
We'll see what they say.

I can probably snug it up, but I don't have any thing that small, the closest chance of finding anything is 45 minutes away.

On the up side, it is a nice looking knife.
LV,

You taking it back?
Unsure at this point, it's an hour and ten minute trip one way.
May just try and source a wrench that fits the tiny bolts.

As mentioned above I called Buck to see what they have to say.
This was the only one the store had.

As it happens, I got my hands on one of these yesterday. Actually, I should add for full disclosure that my experience was similar to yours, and that this was the second Ranger Sport I'd gotten in. I ordered it from Amazon, and the first one showed up with the thumbstuds rattling and freely spinning. As they're press-fit, without the ability to fix the issue, I returned it and Amazon sent me a replacement immediately, and this one is perfect. It's exactly what I wanted. I had recently ordered both 112 50th Anniversary models, and when they came in, I loved the feel in hand, and the shape immediately, as I'd never had a 112 before. However, they're just like the 110s, and not really meant for pocket carry (which as an office drone, wasn't going to work for me). So, I looked around at the various "modernized" variants out there. When I saw the Sport, I knew that was the one. Here's mine:

I've been wanting a 112 Sport ever since they came out but I haven't bought one because I fear that the thumbstuds would be in the way when touching up or sharpening the edge. Anybody had to alter their preferred sharpening angle because the thumbstuds got in the way?

Well, I was in a local Sporting Goods store today.

So I caved and grabbed a 112 Ranger Sport.

I held it, opened it, and closed it. I liked it, so I bought it.
I didn't do a detailed inspection, It's a Buck Knife, I shouldn't have to.

I bring it home and I had a package waiting a Stormy Kromer Mackinaw.

So I take my new Ranger out of its box, and cut the packing tape.
I like the way this knife looks, I like the way it feels in hand,

But after I closed it I heard a noise.
This thing rattles!

When closed, the blade has so much play it hits both sides of the liner.
If I practiced I could do Morse Code with it.

$130.00+ for a Buck and I get this?
Not impressed.

Doesn't anyone care about doing a good job anymore?

If I grasp the bolsters with my thumb and forefinger, I can squeeze it and make it stop.
But man this is disheartening.

I was very excited about this knife.
I went and grabbed my Anniversary 110, solid as a rock.

I paid almost double for the Ranger Sport.
And it will probably turn out to be a great little knife.
But man I tire of issues that shouldn't exist.

LV,
Does it just need tightened? My pivot screw would occasionally work loose a bit till I put some locktite on it. It's been a fantastic knife. Hopefully you get yours squared away....

Just checked mine....the pivot screw is a T10 and the rest of the bolts are T6. Pretty common sizes on knives so it shouldn't be hard to find. Like I said...I'd put a bit of Locktite on the pivot screw and you'll be set.

LV,
Mine is perfect in every way. That’s disappointing on yours

I may make a trip to town and see if I can source the Torx bits at Home Depot.

No return call yet from the Warranty folks.

Or I may just take it back to the store and get a refund.
Shouldn't have to screw with a brand new knife.

I carry mine often but I’ve only stropped it. No problem there

I agree with hunterjrg hunterjrg I don't see the thumb studs being an issue.
You would have to be leaned way over before they contacted the stone.

The 112 Sport is thicker and heavier than the Bugout but definitely more robust. I own both and carry the 112 much more frequently for the above reasons and also due to the clip point blade vs drop point on the Bugout.

As mentioned above, the TRX is more comparable to the Bugout and a great knife as well. It just doesn't deploy as well as the Benchmade.
I've been on the fence with these for awhile. The ONLY thing I don't like about it is that thumb stud. It looks like it was put on as an afterthought. It just doesn't seem to match the knife. I feel they could've designed it better to go wiith the flow of the knife.

In a way, the thumb studs are an afterthought. The knife is the same profile as the original, which was never designed as a one-hand opener.

Update #2
Went to town this afternoon,

Picked up a precision bit set from IFIXIT, ($40.00) no one local had Torx bits that small.
Nice kit should work for eye glasses and a myriad of other uses.

Snugged up the blade and it is normal now.

27 hours in no call back from Buck's Warranty Department.
Rather disappointing.
They must be real busy fixing other mistakes.

LV,
Glad it was just the pivot screw. You'll love the knife....

Final Updtate 03/16/2023

I sat and stared at this 112 for days.
Once the loose blade fix was identified, I noticed the plunge lines were horrible.
I mean way off.

So I went back to the store where I purchased it.
I spoke with the manager of the knife department.
He agreed if it was that bad, it shouldn't have shipped.

I stated I liked the knife. He asked if I would like to just swap it out for a different one.
I said sure.

He called right in front of me, and asked a clerk in one of their other stores if they had a 112 Sport.
The clerk stated they did.

He asked them to verify the blade was snug and the grinds were fairly symmetrical.
He noted that they were even, and the blade was as it should be.

Tuesday, I got a call that my replacement knife was in.
So I could bring the original in and swap it out.

Today I made the 70 minute trip (one way) to do so.
I get there, we open the box, and it's the wrong knife.
It was also the wrong box, the clerk apparently can not read.

So they proposed several options to me.
I could have them try and ship another one, hopefully the right one.
Or I could take store credit, or a refund check.

With over 6 hours of just travel time into this knife.
i decided to cut my losses and take the check refund.

So, after spending a few thousand dollars on Buck Knives,
I'm at a crossroads.

The part that bugs me the most, is never even hearing back from Buck's Warranty Department.
I'm not sure I will be the Buck fan I was before my foray into the 112.

I ordered an ESEE-4 just now in S35VN.

My posts here in the Buck Forum should illustrate, I am in no way a Buck hater.
Prior to this I may have even leaned towards "Fanboy"

Sad day all around.

LV,

LostViking LostViking That's unfortunate about the knife and the mix-up that ensued. I've had a handful of Bucks that had, what I would consider, QC issues. But the vast majority have been very good knives. No call back from Buck is disappointing, but I think they are very busy, from my past experience with phone and email correspondence. (Not saying that is right one way or the other, just my experience.) When I have finally been able to get in touch with them, they have tried their best to make things right.
Worst part is, if the retail store had been able to switch it out right away, the entire situation would have been fixed rather quickly!

LostViking LostViking Ive also had a few duds. 112,105 and a 124 with terrible grinds. Magnacut 110 that was really bad. I tried to buy a 110 auto elite but I couldn’t find an acceptable one. On the other I’ve got some really good ones too. The ones from the custom shop have been great. Seems like all my older ones are smooth with great grinds. Don’t give up hope yet. There are some good ones out there.
