12" AK Villager

Haven't had time to test this one yet. But looks great. Would make a great karda for my 30" AK, although it has a nice karda (about the same size. Hmmm,

Sarge, your Gollum post had me doubled over; absolutely hysterical! And, Tsimi, are you seriously suggesting that Bill Clinton would carry a khuk? If he even knew they exist he'd probably just want to outlaw them so :barf: :barf: :barf: to that idea! Seeing these pics and reading your impressions is making me jealous; I should have jumped on this bandwagon when I had the chance :sigh: . Ah well, it'll give us an excuse to do it again later, right Uncle?

No way would Bill Clinton carry a khuk. He has someone else to do it for him. Ted Kennedy does this too. They outlaw your ability to protect yourself while they have armed guards to protect them.

That was a regulation on dispatching Muscovy ducks, not quackipi.
Quackipi are the stuff of legend, like Grendel. They exist on a fantastic level (or live in fantasy, I forget) and need either heroic measures to eliminate them...or antiacid...(again, depends.)

Maybe the interest in 12"AKs will keep the Kamis so busy making them that there won't be anything else and that oughta just fry old Quacky.:D

I don't know that the kamis focusing all their efforts on 12" AK Villagers would necessarily be a good thing. But, I can tell you I'm pretty dadgummed happy they took the time to make mine. These are "real world" khuks, perfectly suited for regular folks to do regular chores with, day in and day out. A real workin' man's khuk, up to the task and no mollycoddling. I've got much bigger khuks, and much prettier khuks, but now that I've got this one, they'll get to spend more time "resting".

Mine arrived today and I love it. Great convexy edge, very happy with the size, balance and finish. Gonna go get some tru-oil and finish the handle.
I picked up my first WWII on the 1/2 price madness sale, an 18" wooden handle one. I like the longer grip and the balance. If it stops raining this year I may go out and test it! :D

I glad you all love your AK's, but I do want the kami's to make other things. A 12" Sirupati Villager would be nice.

Mine came today. Compared to a heavily used 12" AK blem by Sanu that I got for my wife's gardening habit, it's very close in most respects. Both are 12.5" OAL, 3/8" spine thickness. Weight and balance of both blades feels the same. Scabbards are interchangeable except the villager has no chape. I like that too, it's more compact and functional without it. Karda and chakma are too small to be practical.

The main difference between the two AKs is that the Kumar villager has a fatter handle. I haven't tested it yet, want to clean off the rust first. I suspect it will out-chop my Pen knife, but it won't replace it in my hunting pack. I'm very pleased with this knife.

(edited to adjust picture balance)

use on venison this year? I'd been planning on the Shankar 12inAK, but the recent arrival of Sarge's Pen knife prompts the question. Right now, the width of the Pen knife blade seems a bit broad to get "in there," if you know what I mean. (Keep in mind CWD rules--expanded--are in place in Wisconsin, so I won't be splitting bone.)

(Although all of them will probably come into play as I part the carcasses out and process them in the kitchen.)

This year I plan to stick with the Pen-knife and a smaller blade such as Art's karda. The Pen-knife excelled at splitting the ribcage during field-dressing (a task my 12" sirupati failed miserably at), quartering off the shoulders and filleting the backstraps away from the spine.

With the CWD situation I guess you won't be splitting ribs in the field, but I found the Pen's blade shape and narrow spine to be ideal for carving large sections of meat during the butchering process. It eliminates the "jagged edges" on the large cuts caused by smaller blades.

I haven't tried a 12" AK on venison, I was so satisfied with the Pen knife that I never felt the desire to experiment further. I also use an 18" AK with a baton to split the pelvis (again, probably not relevant in a CWD situation), but I don't carry it in the field.

I did manage to pick up a very nice hunter by Sam Henson at the MKA blade show last weekend. I plan to try it out this fall to see how it stacks up against the karda.

Today I prepped and tested the villager. First I washed the blade with hot water and Dawn to remove the oil, and sanded away all the rust. Then I etched it with white vinegar and neutralized with baking soda solution before rinsing and drying. The handle was sanded and oiled, and the whole knife was waxed and buffed with a cloth.

I replaced the karda and chakma with substantially larger, horn-handled blemished ones that had been previously taken from an 18" sirupati.

The only edge preparation I gave it was with a chakma and a few minutes on the strop. I tested the entire edge surface by aggressively chopping seasoned douglas fir firewood. The edge cut well and remained sharp. This is one fierce little knife at an unbeatable price!

I expect the problem will solve itself, but I have to cut into crevices that formerly would just be left with the bone for roast, pressure cooker, etc. I know I'll end up with one of the Marbles in my hand.:) Part of it is tradition, part sentimentality, and part function.

Nice job on the villager, and as I said, great images.

Raghorn, Thanks for the pictures, they look great. Does the villager have a shorter grip, it looks like it?

Red, the villager's grip is actually about 1/8" longer than the other 12" AK, but it's quite a bit beefier. It's still a good bit shorter than the handle on a Pen knife or BAS.

One of these days I'm gonna have to polish and shine and rehandle my 12 AK with the half inch spine I call my "Pocket Battleship" after the Graf Spee.

Oh, and they are a lot like carrying a 32 - nice to have when you aren't carrying a real gun.

In the same way a 12" AK is nice to have with you when you can't take a real khuk along.
