12 pt omni hunter or 103 skinner?

I can see that nothing has changed around here, Dave has an insatiable need to be right. after your post, was my second opinion. The 103 is shaped with a deep belly in order to be a Skinning knife, thus the name 103 Skinner. Again any tool can have multiple uses, it doesn't mean it was made for those uses. My point was merely that the Omni Hunter is more versatile.
Dave you really need to grow up, its been too many years of this...

uncalled for Matt, you have a great collection and a lot of knowledge, as does DM. bury the 106 and we'll all benefit. you guys are both respected and offer great things to this forum.

I will appreciate everyone letting this thread get out of the frying pan. I haven't looked this over to give opinion on knives or comments. Sometimes I see good knife collectors discussing in a thread and I slack off and not worry about being a moderator and just visit later. As stated, a gaggle of folks have extensive collections and have searched out knowledge outside this forum. Several in this thread are of that flock. I will leave thread open and will hope only knife discussion will occur or I will have to get my moderator hatchet out and cut it off. I have two a Estwing and Swedish Grandfors.

Please don't hack up thread till I've had a chance to make my purchase this Thursday and post it Lol.

Buy both its more fun.
I have the omni 12pt but its not my fav. However i would pick it over the 103 because it is larger.
My favorite is the buck lite max, and it comes with an orange handle as well, and I think i have all the fxd blade skinners except the 103.

Just looking at the 2. The 12pt. has more point and less belly than the 103. And more handle than the 103. And at least in the 2016 catalog the 12pt. is only offered in 420 steel. Whereas the 103 can be found with 440C, 425M, 420HC and S30V steel. DM

I have both, well I did and ended up selling off the 12pt Omni. I prefer the 103. Something about the handle on the 392 I could never get use to. It has what I would call a dramatic curve toward the butt end and maybe it's my hand size but it just never felt right. Of the two the 392 is lighter but again I would make sure you handle one first and see if it's what you really want.

I don't have a horse in this race so I'm not betting but I'll offer a photo toward my point. Even though I don't have the Omni I handled it in a knife store and couldn't warm up to it's handle. Thus, I passed. So, I can see what Revolver is saying. Here's a photo of several Buck models that express different style bellies.
From left to right: Buck's Club knife 2010, a custom Selector blade, Buck's 334 Trapper (Camillus) and the 103. Notice how & when the belly starts. All but the Club 110 the bellies started in the first 1/2" of the blade. Hence, belly forward and the Collectors Club 110's belly didn't start until one inch from the point. So, more belly back. A subtle difference but important with a Skinner. DM

Well, I have officially made my purchase. After handling both I chose the 103 with cocabolo handles. The omni hunter is nice but the 12 points blade was just a bit too much for me and the handle didn't feel right in hand. By contrast the 103 felt great in my hand and the blade is just right, loved it.

I get a chuckle reading this. As I used my 103 to bone out back strap and tender loin from a buck I took and I liked the way it worked on this chore. DM

All silliness aside and back on topic, this is a terrific knife. It's the choice I would have made on looks alone. Congrats, it will be something to admire and use for a lifetime. Until you can post some real pics, here is one from the Buck website.:thumbup:

I respect your opinion and you prove that with your pictures of actual use. Dont worry about the others opinion when they just post a pic and seem to know it all. I have learned a lot from you DM and continue to do so.

The 103/603 is my favorite knife for hunting, Ive dressed and skinned a lot of deer with it

Thank you Doug. Good for you. I don't think the 103 is the only knife and I don't normally carry one. I've used many on deer and for other cutting chores and enjoy Buck's variety. I do like a blade with some healthy belly. Keep contributing, your knowledge is valued. DM

Enough is enough. I hope all folks will let some air out of their sails and all will steer a straighter course.

Want to keep talking about these knife models or showing these knife models photos start a new thread.
This is by-by to this one.
