Pushing the blade forward or drawing it backwards?

Either way actually

Edit: Upon reading Steely's reply, I realize I was assuming you were asking which way would dull the blade with too much pressure. If you meant which way to sharpen, then my rule of thumb is pushing forward on stones, and drawing back on belts/sandpaper-mousepad. And always draw back when you strop, if for no reason other than to avoid cutting the leather.

I always start with a mild freehand stone to knock down the bur that usually comes on the knife. Then I might hit it with a lick or two on a butcher's steel or a hard chakma.

Finally, and this is where personal preference comes in, I use a heavily loaded piece of scrap leather on thick magazine. I use the plain ol' Dremel polishing compound and pull the edge back toward me with a controlled angle and maybe the tiniest of flourish at the end to sort of whip the last bit off the edge along the compound.

The amount of pressure doesn't need to be much. It just has to be constant.

As always, YMMV. Sharping knives?....well, you'e in cat-skinning country for sure.

On a side note, yeah that is one incredible AKB. Oddly enough, though it is my favorite HI design, I havent had one in almost a decade. I gave mine to my dad to keep in his camper. I never got around to owning another one:o

I should remedy that in 2017, I think;)

Steely the captain of AK Bowies world wide don't got one?!!!! My heart is broken.

We most definitely need to remedy this forthwith if not sooner but forthwith is generally pretty quick.

Oh now, it's no woe is me moment. I used to have a Munk Chunk that I sent off to someone who could use it more. I also have my beloved 10" akb and the ever handy IBBBB.

The "classic" 15"er will find its way to me when she do;)

Mr. Axel, be sure and have a nice fluffy beach towel handy when you open the triangle box. (treat the box kindly, I love triangle boxes).
That thing is so drop dead gorgeous your gonna be bawling your eyes out. I can feel it in my cells.

I have one and it make me heart go pitter patter every time I look at it, and when I hold it, well get the defibrillator, it's a heart stopper.

Enjoy. Well I should say I hope you get it. If you don't you can always use the towel for the opposite reason I reckon. I'll cry with you.

That little beauty is on the way Bawanna so I suppose we won't be needing to have a good cry together. Sure appreciate the offer though. Also appreciate your advice on the beach towel. Being a relative rookie I thought a box of tissues would have been sufficient to handle the tears of joy. Thanks to your wise counsel I am pulling my favorite terry cloth beach towel out of winter storage and I'll have it handy for when the postman delivers that 3-sided box.

Try to get video, I just love seeing a full growed man cry crocodile tears of joy and happiness.

The tissue just don't make, you'll understand in another day or two. I'm tearing up a little bit just thinking about you opening that bundle of joy.

Backwards. What Steely says tho about the cat skinnin. Once you get a feel of the proper angle you can then cut into your stone or steel to profile the edge. I personally would recommend sharpening off edge until you get the feel of the angle and shape of the convex. Sharpie coloring and attention is the key! Be aware of where you are removing metal from:thumbup: Coloring the edge will likely surprise you and will surely teach you something you didnt know was happening. Anyone who dont have an AKB...Well I feel for ya! Thats just too sad! Even worse is having one and not having used it! They are in my opinion one of the best things HI has ever done other than traditional Khuks!

Steely: You really need to remedy that situation sir! You are the cause for my collection and I thank you dearly for that:D

No confusion; you just made my day! DD on the Sarge!

You kept your eyes peeled and you won. I'm not even mad. (just jealous!)

I hadn't even heard of the Sarge until a few days ago - I hope they're making a comeback.

It would be interesting to know if this is new or old stock....

I've very carefully crawl out on a limb (truly not easy for me) and say that's it's most likely new stock being as it's a Kumar knife.

But I got nothing solid to back that up with.

Oh heck, how do I turn around on this spindly little limb. I might be doomed here, aw no worries it was a low branch, I'll be ok really I will.

It COULD be old stock because Kumar was around when the first sarge/kph knives hit the forum. However, I don't remember him doing many. I think Bura and his assistant did the lion's share. Then again, if Kumar didn't make them, he sure nailed the design this go around. It's changed very little compared to something like the AK bowie which has evolved so much, it's almost an entirely different critter.

My gut says it's new stock. Kumar either remembered how to make them or they had one kicking around that he copied. At any rate. It looks top notch. Those wanting a handy yet very, very lightweight hiking knife need not look any further. I've got a modified one by the designer himself, and I wouldn't give it up for nothin';)

You have no credibility unless your out on a spindly tree limb at least 3 inches off the ground.

I'm skeered of heights too. Just so yall know.. I prefer very low branches.

In my youth I could climb a tree to the moon as long as I use my hands. But ladders, scaffolding, walking walls petrified.
I did it for years but I was not happy and only when we couldn't find somebody else to do it.

If you'd said 6' I'd never joke with you again.

I have a 6 year old daughter who is going to be a stunner at 16. I've already began to practicing my spiel:
This is my only daughter. Neither hellfire nor wrathful angel will keep me from protecting her. I'm an upstanding guy with friends on both sides of the law and a clean record. I dig 8' deep holes for a living. It's no problem to dig it 10 and order another yard of concrete. The last place someone would look would be under 30,000 gallons of recreational good times;)
