1911 Prime Choice Cut

I have had some experience with customs; however, none of the customs that I have fired would outperform any of my Baers. When you opine that "none of the quasi-premium mentioned will approach {several customs}", what exactly do you mean??? I have to be honest...., I DON'T CARE about fit and finish compared to ACCURACY potential and RELIABILITY. If you can't fire..., you can't hit. If you can't hit..., you can't win. If you can't win..., you're dead. It really is just that simple. If you can't rely on it, all the time, every time..., it doesn't matter how pretty it is OR how much it costs. I like Brown, and I like Wilson. But, if a Nighthawk is not comparable IN PERFORMANCE to a Baer..., I'll stick with Baer. I DO, however, value everyone's comments and opinions. Please keep 'em coming.

Are you set on the quasi-premium production model or would you consider a true custom? None of those mentioned above will approach Heirloom Precision, Chuck Rogers, CT Brian, etc. I'd buy a Colt and then send it to my gunsmith of choice and have it built to meet my desires, not some generic, one-size-fits-all compromise.

I beat you to the punch there, bub! Next time, read more carefully. ;) :p (see my post, #27) I just got my Kimber back from Rogers today (an early pre-series II Custom shop Compact; officer's shortened grip with commander length slide - SWEET carry piece), and his work is phenomenal!!! It is getting sent out tomorrow for COMPLETE refinishing with IonBond's Tungsten DLC (known as DiamondBlack).

Honestly though, a full custom job by one of the aforementioned smiths fits EXACTY what you are looking for. Berryhill is especially well known for his accururizing/reliability work. Do a little bit of Googling on Dave Berryhill and Chuck Rogers to see for yourself. Plenty of info on them in the various 1911 forums. IMHO, they're two of the best in the business right now.

Well, I can't let a 1911 thread go by without saying that at the end of the 1970's my ex-husband said to me: "Women cannot shoot .45s well at all." Needless to say, I went out and got some instruction and have been shooting them ever since. I loved the Wilsons I've shot, but I am extremely happy with my "baby" the Brown.

I don't know from Porsches or the really fancy stuff (well, I have a peculiar taste for Blue Label thanks to the Bossman! ;)) but I live alone and if anybody gets past my dogs I know I can defend myself. I could never borrow one to shoot, and I waited a long time for her: "Baby" is the smoothest, most accurate 1911 I have ever had the pleasure to shoot, much less own!

I think it is wonderful that there are so many options available. Wasn't like that when I started shooting the 1911. Had to settle for an old surplus rattletrap that I wish I still owned!

My Wilson Super Grade sits in the safe, ALL the Baers are gone and my Kimbers are forgotten about. My Ed Brown leaves the house with me every time I walk out the door and it NEVER misses what it shoots at.

UNTIL I SEE PICS, your posts don't exist. Let's see them Browns!!!!!

here is my Baer:

I am more than satisfied with my series 70 commander; of course it is an old reliable friend. I probably have 40,000 rounds through and just going on my third or fourth recoil spring.

Gosh, Cobalt, I thought everyone was tired of my "Baby" picture! ;):D

Sigh...a girl needs a 1911, too! :D

I've never had any complaints re: my '02 WC CQB. I do plan on changing the ambi to reg., someday. :D

That wilson looks good as well. I may have a single sided safety or 10 laying around. I can send you one if you wish.

I've had a Les Baer Thunder Ranch Special and a Nighthawk GRP (both are gone as I trade alot). Both were blue steel 5" 1911's. I thought the fit and finish was much better on the LB and the LB was also more accurate. I sold the Nighthawk ASAP. At the time my buddy had a Performance Center S&W 5" 1911 that shot better than the Nighthawk GRP.

If I was going to buy another high end 1911 I would get a Les Baer Thunder Ranch Special in the stainless steel commander size. I have been lusting after that model for years. It is hard to beat a LB and I understand their customer service is Busse-like.

i have multiple 1911's, kimbers are a piece of crap. the two i have bought as well as a 1600 dollar custom that has made me buy an all new brown interior to make it shoot just a little bit. my wilson super grades have thousands of rounds and well as my ed brown and novak which shot flawlessly with -0- break in. Way would you buy a gun or a knife that needed a "break in" that's bull $hit and you should stay away from those scam guys. anybody telling you in their manual to shoot about 300 dollars of ammo through it before it before it will function should take their piece, barrel first and shove it.

we don't have time to shoot our 3000K pistols before they shoot. any maker that makes you "break your gun in" is just selling you something off the shelf.

wilson, brown (not dave) and novak make 1911's you can count on hands down. briely also has made me a custom uspsa stocker that kicks ass.

also true 1911's that are called "double stack" are not, so don't go there...

you want a spray and pray, lead curtain, buy a 16 round 9mm puss pistol, and hope you expand to .45 at best

OMG,go tell that to LB :)To his defence,my TR special had few issues in the begining and became flawless after 700 rounds.

Aw come on Skunk... tell us how your REALLY feel... ;)

I only own one double stack 45... It's no 1911, but the powder river trigger kit helps out a lot with the pull and over-travel. 13 plus one 230 grn'rs make me sleep a bit better with it on my nightstand... light attached.

But like I said... it doesn't hold a candle to this one:

Or this one:

And despite your dislike of Kimber... the first gen Kimber's were money. This one is 100% dead-on reliable and almost as accurate as my baer or brown.

I heart 1911's... :D

you tellim skunkypooh. I have never owned a Kimber, but there are many that love them and many that hate them. Wilson, Brown and Baer probably have the best semi custom rep. Novak is a custom shop and my best 1911 came from them, specifically Joe Bonar built mine when he was still alive and he was considered one of the best 1911 smiths.

he built mine too off a springfield. beautiful stippled carry package. i just returned the slide after 15 years to get new headlights installed. sorry about the kimber rant but the last 1600 i spent on one sucks as well as their support. so i just called brown and installed all new upper and lower workings. so what it boils down to is a frame and slide from kimber with brown workings

here is my novak, it will be buried with me only when i run out of ammo
