Aw come on Skunk... tell us how your REALLY feel... ;)

...

And despite your dislike of Kimber... the first gen Kimber's were money. This one is 100% dead-on reliable and almost as accurate as my baer or brown.

Agreed 100%!!! This one is mine (prior to the work I am having done). It has eaten everything I have ever put in it, and I have not had a single jam or failure of any kind in several thousand rounds. She is VERY accurate as well, especially for a 4" barrel. I carry this one all the time. The first gen Kimbers are excellent!

he built mine too off a springfield. beautiful stippled carry package. i just returned the slide after 15 years to get new headlights installed. sorry about the kimber rant but the last 1600 i spent on one sucks as well as their support. so i just called brown and installed all new upper and lower workings. so what it boils down to is a frame and slide from kimber with brown workings

here is my novak, it will be buried with me only when i run out of ammo

ok, something strange going on here. We both have been into busse knives forever and we both had a springfield 1911 built up by joe bonar of novak. that's right mine was also a springfield. Something very strange going on over here. I feel like I am looking into a mirror.

sorry about the kimber rant but the last 1600 i spent on one sucks as well as their support.

At the moment, I only have 1 Kimber, a Custom II (their cheapest full size model that I put night sights on myself because it was cheaper that way), and I've never had an issue out of it. Brand new to now, it shot well when it was new and shoots better with every round I put through it.

Every company that usues injection molded parts though will have some pistols that don't work right (this includes Colt) because they are "mass produced" and don't have the attention to detail as with a Baer, Brown, Wilson, Dan Wesson, etc (hammer forged parts, more labor intensive and a lot more attention to detail).

And Skunk, that's really surprising that Kimber's support did not meet your expectations in your case, that's the first time I've heard that, the few Kimbers we see in our store that have issues, they've always helped us out 100%.

Kimbes biggest problem is inconsistency. I have seen tons of Kimbers and for every good one, there seems to be several problematic ones. One thing is for sure, if you go with a Springfield loaded, you will get a gun as good as any kimber and better than most with one of the best service and guaranties in the industry. SW, Sig, SA would be my choices over a kimber.

The new Auto Ordnances are excellent guns at a good price and they are one of the oldest american manufacturers of 1911's.

if you search the gun forums there are lots more little nagging problems with NHC than wilson. Not saying their bad, but not better or better looking than wilson. The good ones are great. They do stand behind their product. At the pricepoint you really can't go wrong. If you want it I am sure it will be a great piece. It is all a matter of taste really.

I really can't say more than what Cobalt has said.

I guess I'm still on the cheap side. Have never paid more than $1K for a .45.

I'm saving this info. Good stuff!!

Just read this entire thread.

Well worth it, too.

I'm down to maybe just 4 1911 .45s ... with nothing left high-end, really. Perhaps I have made an error!!:)

yes you have:D

I hope at least one of those four is a colt.

If you have a springer you can send it off to have it customized and get back a great gun.

But if I were not into collecting 1911's and wanted just one that coould be considered the best or near the best at any level it would be a Dan Wesson Valor or any of the bobs

I know a 1911 gunsmith, and he's worked on more S&W 1911s (the E series the most) than Kimbers (for issues, not gutting and replacing for the hell of it).

S&Ws have external extractors, and he's had to work on 10 or so S&Ws that have had the extractor pin drift down the slide and lodge itself into the frame, seizing the pistol completely.

That is one gunsmith. Did you read the link above and how an entire police dept basically had garbage kimbers. That pretty much trumps Kimbers having less issues, lol. The E series solved that problem from what I understand and even with the original extractor issues, there was no comparison to Kimbers issues for how many years now? to many to count.

I read it, I've also heard about police departments being issued brand new Glocks and they've had to return the entire batch because they didn't function right.

The jamming could be due a bad batch uf underpowered recoil springs, I have no explination about the broken sights because those things are pretty damn hard to break unless you use a sledge hammer on them or drop them 20 feet on concrete, and I've seen new Kimbers with the mag ejector button falling off. Most of the time it's rough machining inside or the spring having burs from hell, call Kimber up, they'll send you a new one free of charge.

Kimber is not perfect, they admit their turds they've released. If you have an external extractor model, they'll give you an internal extractor slide free of charge, and their Polymer custom was iffy if works right since their frames were outsourced and the company who made them had a wide range of quality control. But for a standard production company, they work great and if you have an issue, they're like SA and they take care of you.

Understood.

[I'm old. 3 of them are Colts. Series 70.]

I have heard the gen4 glocks have had lots of issues. It's good that kimber is stepping up in the service area as they should considering they produce more 1911's than most of the other manufacturers. You can google kimber issues, problems, breakege etc and you will get tons of info. The fact is that Kimber is very inconsistent in quality. I don't own either SW or Kimber, but if I had to pick it would be SW all the way.

nice. I am trying to pick up a 1917 and 1943 1911 colt

Best of luck! Father-in-law had the 1917 ... went to his oldest son, of course.

Just googled the Dan Wesson. Mighty, mighty impressive!!

I have clearly NOT been keeping up with the times.

I recently picked up a Dan Wesson and I am VERY impressed with it. All forged parts... fit and finish are excellent. Action is like butta...

Truth is, I really wanted a Brown Executive Carry... but after handling the DW Guardian(I paid $1200), I just couldn't justify the extra thousand dollars for the Brown. I have a Brown SF and love it to death... but it's not $1000 better than a DW.

Here is an interesting thread comparing lots of different 1911's in fit and function. Great read... enjoy.
