1k Post / Epic Summer Fiddleback GAW: The Bushcraftiness(?!) User Challenge

Some cool entries recently! Everyone's kicking up a notch before the big drawing. Thanks again Will!

Prom52 - Looks like a lot of fun in Key West. I went there with my family around 40 years ago and don't remember a thing. I'll have to take the kids there one of these days. That HB looks cool with the dragon fruit background!

Velosa - that looks like a mighty fine adventure. What cool property to have access to. The kiddos look like they really enjoyed it. And Ben's Kephart looks like it got a good workout.

hasco - looks like you guys had a fun urban adventure. That bow drill is insane. And that GitD Bushcrafter is sweet.

Michael - Bummer about the rain, but looks like you and the turkeys had a blast anyway. You had the makings of a good bow drill set.

Not sure where else I should post this, so it'll go here I guess. Not an entry as I'm already in, but I got away for another camping trip this last weekend so here's another trip report. Hope you all don't mind.

My wife and kids asked me what I wanted to do for my birthday and the only thing I wanted to do was head out camping with them. The Hill People Gear folks were having their Summer Gathering the same weekend so we headed west to meet up with them for a 3 day camping trip. Evan and Scot Hill are the brothers behind HPG and if you're ever looking for a backpack, daypack, pouches, etc, I strongly suggest you hit them up. I've been using a Highlander as my daypack since last year's gathering when I first met them and got to try out some gear and it's awesome. Great folks and great gear.

This year's gathering was near Buzzard Divide (great name) southwest of Glenwood Springs, about a 4.5 hour drive from home and about 1.5 hours from the nearest cell phone service.

The views on the drive out were incredible. This is why I live in Colorado:

Of course, since no one is shooting at them right now, all sorts of wildlife were out and about:

The family surprised me with a cake and I was embarrassed as everyone sang to me. Wasn't expecting that.

Unfortunately, we were in a fire ban area so all our cooking ended up being on the coleman or on the Trangia. Analysis of the Hunter as a camp knife will have to wait for another time as it really only saw duty as a kitchen knife. Here's our standard car camping kitchen setup, and you can kinda see the Hunter in it's place on my hip where it rode all weekend:

We forgot steak knives, so the Hunter cut up everyone's:

The view from our camp:

My family and I (my sister made the trek with us as well) snuck away for a hike. Our camp was on top of a mesa and we found a game trail heading down to the creek below:

Some pretty big game on this trail. Compared to my size 14s:

The prize at the end of the game trail:

You can kind of see the creek down below in this pic. My son decided he wanted to go straight up the hill back to camp rather than follow the trail back up the draw:

Just some of the fun we had. I post this strictly for the Fiddleback content - Hunter in the HJE sheath in view.

Looks like a great trip! My oldest has been asking to go back to CO. I've been trying to figure out if we can sneak in a trip later this year.

Michael

Incredible vistas Thurin......thanks for sharing. My wife and I have had the pleasure of visiting your great state several times over the years. When we lived in St Louis, we used to make the 15 hr road trip out west to enjoy that clear mountain air and the incredible scenery. Our biggest adventure was a 10 mile backpacking trip in Rocky Mountain National Park......of course we were a tad younger at the time. I've also enjoyed playing golf in Colorado. Amazing how that ball will fly in the higher altitudes !

Looks like an absolutely great time thurin. At least the Hunter got to take big pieces of steak and make bite size pieces for all. And you got to pop a few caps along the way. I hope that you were able to find all of your brass. Nothing gets my goat like when I am out shooting and there is that one elusive piece of brass. I always want to reload every piece as often as I can.

Incredible vistas . . . I've also enjoyed playing golf in Colorado. Amazing how that ball will fly in the higher altitudes !

Come on down to Bolivia and see how far the ball will fly . . . oh, and we've got some amazing vistas too!

I have got to go out west. Man, that view!

Head on out guys, I'll show you around.

You're welcome prom52. RMNP is a great playground to hike in. My other trip report earlier this month was from there. There are some pretty awesome mountain golf courses up in Vail and Summit County. The ball absolutely flies up there. But that means it flies way off course pretty easy too. :)

I'm sure the Hunter feels neglected. Get it all pumped up to go show off as a camp knife and it's stuck in the kitchen again. Although it had it's ego stoked when we were doing gear pass arounds and everyone oohh'd and aahh'd over it. The terrain made brass retrieval a lot of fun.

I'd love to visit some day. You have mountains that make ours look like little hills. And you have the highest golf course in the world.

I'm in for the epic summer giveaway!

Got back from taking the family camping for 5 days and just uploaded the pics.

On the first evening I was able to get within 10 feet of this deer.

I have no idea why it didn't run, even with the cameras snapping shutter. That's taken with no zoom at all.

Oddly enough the next day (miles away while driving) I snapped this.

That one sauntered across the road with confidence. I've ridden this road a number of times, glad I've never encountered dear while on the bike!

A long shot of what is, to me, one of Gods special touches. Hume Lake and Camp. The lake itself is very shallow and just stunning with sandy beaches and some excellent engineering from humans.

If you ever have a chance to see the Sequoia National Forrest, I highly recommend a visit.

Messing around.

I sat there on the beach whittling and making various notches and fuzz sticks while the wife and kids went swimming. I really should have taken more pics, but I was too busy having fun. ;)

Overall it was a great, much needed, family trip. I'm not 100% healthy right now so I cannot do any hardcore backpacking or pack camping but I'm doing what I can. While it would be easy to go to Disneyland or another place/trip like that, but nothing beats getting the family out in the sun, teaching them how to start (and extinguish) fires, how to fish, cook, properly set up and leave nothing behind and how to enjoy nature in general.

Cool thread! ;)

You guys are doing awesome... Contest is almost over -- the knife is boxed up and just waiting on a label ;)!

For those of you on the fence, its not too late; there's still time to submit your entries!

“I’m in for the epic summer give away!”

I have included a couple of different subjects here.

Last month I got invited to go on the fishing trip up in the mountains with a group of guys. I don’t own any fishing equipment or have much experience fishing at all. I ended up having a great time hanging out with the guys and I learned a bunch from their experience.

This is Saddlebag Lake in the eastern Sierras north of Mammoth, CA. The elevation is just over 10,000 feet.

Despite minimal fishing skills, I managed to catch a nice 2 pound Rainbow trout first thing in the morning. Our group caught our limit that day. Most of the fish were in the 1 to 1-1/2 pound range.

I used my Hiking Buddy to clean the fish and get him bagged and ready for the trip home.

The following photos are from this morning outside on the back patio. I thought that some coffee and a little whittling before work would be a good idea.

Nathan (a.k.a. thurin) and I recently exchanged a few knives on a temporary basis so that we can each try out models that we don’t have. The following will be part of a future thread called Trio Exchange where we each give you our thoughts about the experience.

For today I chose to use Nathan’s Runt to start carving out a spoon. I have never tried carving a spoon before, but it seems that just about every survival “expert” says that you must be able to carve a spoon to fend off starvation as soon as you leave the pavement.

I grabbed a piece of balsa wood that I found in the garage as a suitable place to start. Yeah I know that it is soft wood not really suitable for a real spoon, but it is what I had on hand. I drew a spoon outline and started whittling with push cuts. I quickly switched to a side grip with my thumb out on the blade for more control and smaller cuts. I found the Runt to be very comfortable and effective for carving like this despite its diminutive size.

I’ll get around to more work on the spoon over the long weekend.

Thanks Will for starting this thread with your generous giveaway offer. I appreciate all of your contributions here on the forum. You have been a strong influence in my Fiddleback choices along the way.

Happy Independence Day everyone!

Phil

Strig - Hume Lake looks like a neat place. So many places I need to go see.

Phil - Nice catch! How'd the hiking buddy do on the trout? Nothing much better in my book that frying up a freshly caught trout in some butter. Cool spoon work with the Runt. I'm looking forward to your analysis on our trade.

No package = no entry :(

Good luck all! It's been fun to watch and I'll be slightly jealous of whoever wins ;)

Hey all,
Well the contest is closed! Seeing that Ken did announce that Fiddleback Friday would be kicking off at 1000 EST tomorrow morning (the same time I was going to do the drawing), I'm going to go ahead and do the drawing tonight! Stand by, as I will be posting the winner momentarily so everyone can enjoy FBF tomorrow uninterrupted by some silly GAW munging up the sharking :D.

Stand by

The winner has been chosen (next post), but before I make the announcement, I would really like to say thank you to everyone who participated.

The goal here was to encourage and incentivize folks to enjoy their Fiddlebacks through their intended purpose (use ;)). With that being said, it was really great to see everyone's entries and the various and creative ways folks have incorporated Andy's knives into some really cool adventures! It was great to see the wide variety of adventures folks went on -- from spectacular vistas in the West and possibly the most perfect camp nessie (Thurin), to an epic family RV trip (Dave), some biscuits & a bullroarer (Schmittie), a trip to Mark Twain National Forest (Viral), some dragon fruit & perfect weather in the keys(Prom52), a fantastic family outing with a BEAUTIFUL Kephart (Velosa), the MOST EPIC bow drill EVER (Hasco), some phenomenal photos camping with the family in a summer storm (RRacontour), a spectacular family outing among the redwoods at Hume lake (Strigamort), and the mother of all Mammoth fishing trips.. with a carved spoon to boot (Comprehensivist) -- every single one of you truly exemplified the goals of this contest. Thank you all for your participation, time, and willingness to share your experiences; its really great to see folks still taking time out of their busy schedules to get both themselves and their families into the great out doors to experience life and mother nature at its finest!

So, without further delay, the winner is...

SCHMITTIE (Post #34)... www.random.org selected 36

Cheers,

Will
