1k Post / Epic Summer Fiddleback GAW: The Bushcraftiness(?!) User Challenge

Congrats schmittie!!! Thanks Will for doing the GAW!

Hopefully we'll keep the trip reports flowing even after the giveaway - I love seeing all the posts and Fiddlebacks getting dirty. Great stuff.

Enjoy it dude -- great entry and VERY COOL bull roarer (Mick Dundee approves )

I didn't realize it was ending early, but I want to make my post anyway! :)

I’m in for the epic summer give away!

I had several outdoor adventures recently, but only have pictures of one. I took my younger son fishing and hammocking. We made a weekend of it at Smith Mountain Lake, Virginia. We worked on firebuilding, went fishing, fish cleaning, preparation and cooking. We caught two 20" stripers and 1 19" largemouth bass. We were most successful trolling with artificial bait around 18' down. Thaniel got to reel in all the fish, unhook them, and helped clean them. I uses my Sneaky Pete to clean the fish and remove the fillets (I did not skin the fillets with the Sneaky Pete! LOL). We cut feather sticks (I cut most of them, but taught some knife skills), and we cut thin slivers of wood to start the fire. I think Thaniel could start his own fire now!

It was a great weekend, but the best parts were eating the striper and hanging in the hammock! I don't have many pics, but a few!

Stripers (yum!) -- Awesome post Will!! As a consolation you're still eligible for the spa credit, so thanks for participating dude! I'm sure there might be one or two in the collection that could use a little TLC from the forge ;)!

Congrats Schmittie on the win & also to Will for setting the stage for a fun experience for all !

Congrats Schmittie! Thanks for the cool GAW Will. Like a bunch of the other guys said, I hope the posts don't stop here.

Congrats to Schmittie and thanks again to Will.

I know others feel this way too, but it kind of felt like we were all winners well before the drawing. I mean, we got outside with friends and family, beautiful knives, fantastic scenery.... Sounds like a perfect summer to me. 😄

Thanks Will and congratulations Schmittie! This has been a fun thread.

Happy Independence Day.

Awesome contest Will!! Thanks so much and congrats Schmittie! It was really fun seeing everyone's posts and learning a little more about our fellow fiddlers.

Congratulations Schmittie on the win and to you Will for offering up that wonderful knife.
I really enjoyed the posts of your trips fellow fiddlebackers. It was great to see some of your wonderful country.
Thanks again .
Mick

Congratulations Schmittie, and thank you to Will for such generosity. Enjoy your new knife and spa treatments everyone.

Congrats Schmittie, and many thanks to Will for hosting/sponsoring this awesome event. I really had fun looking at all the pics, and again was reminded how diverse and cool our members are. Finally got to go out last week as I had been burnt out from work & etc., but it rained about half the time during a 2 day, 1 night solo backpacking trip at the Allegheny National Forest. Bad news is I couldn't take the bushcrafter I brought with me out much, the good news was I had fun being in the woods (quite literally) for 24+ hours.

I posted a Fiddlebackless 4th of July 'adventure' in my Adopt a Fiddleback thread! We need to start an official 'Bushcraftiness' thread so that people will continue posting these types of pics/adventures.

Thanks again Will for inspiring everybody to do this!

Wasn't quite sure where to post this so I plugged it in here since it has to do with summer trips.

Have any of you done this from scratch before? This really is my goal. I'd love to be able to bake fresh bread (not just biscuits) in the outdoors. We have an 8 day trip at the end of summer. Maybe I can figure it out by then...

I have not baked bread in the camp Dutch oven, but I do like to cook with them. The only problem that I have is that they are not backpack friendly, but they do a fine job of cooking just about anything one can imagine. I use the ones with feet on them, and do not have a tripod. So I place embers on the top and bottom. I have a steel table with steel sides on three sides to break the wind. In the summer when it is too hot to fire up the oven in the house, I am outside making stuff. I think that I should give the bread a try. I have done corn bread.

Like others, I've done biscuits, bread, and (I'll add) all sorts of cobblers. I've wondered how different baking bread would be from a cobbler, but have never actually tried it.

I have been away from the forum for a few weeks. I just saw this. CONGRATS Schmittie!!:thumbup::) That is awesome!

Thank you again Will for the generosity and the amazing thread. I really enjoyed all of the pics and stories. In hate to this one end. Once again this is the best group of people around.
