1st Benchmade DISASTER

Got my 940 in the mail today from the forum. LNIB. Nearly perfect centering, blade drops free, smooth action. Guess I got lucky.
Will be my new EDC

I look forward to the day I can say that.
Good to hear it is so nice.

That day is today !
Got my 940-1 Carbon fiber, S90V, in the mail today.

I ordered it during the eclipse. The smokey blade finish kind of is a reminder for me of the strange dark light during that time.

I couldn’t not get this knife I finally was literally compelled.

The combination of the carbon fiber, the deep blue posts and the handle shape became a combination that I simply had to have in my pocket.

It finally became just a matter of time. Like the space probe(s) Voyager I just kept going by one planet or another to get more and more momentum until I was up to speed to get where I wanted to get.

Substitute me for the probe and my day job for the planets and the 940 as the destination.

To be fair to all the vendors here I won’t say which one I finally ordered from but beings I went with a real knife store with enthusiastic knife people on their end (I phoned in the order) I was able to request that they look over the actual knives before they shipped and I am very pleased with my purchase :
  • Blade well enough centered; barely off doesn’t bother me at all.
  • That little line at the transition to the tip is barely/slightly angled; matters not at all and I can easily fix that if I ever decide to.
  • Blade is sharp enough; some bur (much more than my blurple Para when it arrived) but shaves one direction and will shave both directions as soon as I debur with a couple of extra fine diamond stones.
  • This was important to me; the blade is not ground too much near the choil. There is no recurve and there is plenty of material there.
  • Pivot/blade did not drop . . . oiled the pivot . . . still did not drop . . . adjusted the pivot screw the tiniest fraction of a turn/couple of degrees. DROPS FINE
  • Smooth and consistent through it’s swing.
  • Lock smooth and not too firm THANK YOU GUYS YOU WERE EXACTLY RIGHT ABOUT THAT ! ! ! I’M SO PLEASED.

Fit and finish all that I could have hoped for.

I was surprised at how light this knife is. WOW ! Ha, ha, ha if I look at the reviews on amazon I BET there are people there complaining about how “toy like” it is and complaining about how it is too light and that they sent it back because there wasn’t enough “""""quality””””” there. They actually say that about the Spyderco Dragonfly etc. Dumb sheeets.

Yah, I won’t be complaining that way THAT’S FOR SURE.

The price :
  • I have been going back and forth. Nick says it is too much.
  • I went full price so I could have a real store behind me if I just got a lemon or there was some issue. Yah I know . . . Benchmade warranty and stuff but still.
  • You know what ? Carbon fiber handle, milled for partial liners (not just stuck onto full liners or faux carbon lam on top of some other material), SIX individually placed screw anchors in the carbon fiber for the clip screws.
  • Long enough screws for attaching the liners to the scales (Nick I respectfully disagree with you here). I would much rather have the screws protrude a little inside the knife than have them too short (I have a knife were they don’t even reach the full depth of the liner thickness). Screws only come in so many stock lengths it isn’t like there is a choice unless the screws are custom cut for the knife (the other option is thicker scales).
  • High vanadium alloy blade steel takes a fancy heat treat (costs more to do).
  • Stone washed blade finish.
  • Darkend blade finish (I forget what that is called).
  • Very desirable blue posts . . . OK that was worth the price right there right ? ? ? ?
  • The lovely axis lock. WITH THE LIGHT (correct in my opinion) SPRING ACTION.
  • Blade tip well protected (think: lots of thought and experience went into the design) worth paying extra for in my book.
  • Parkerized clip (I hate the painted scratched up thing . . . I didn’t have to request an optional parkerized clip).
I may be crazy but I feel like I got ~$270 worth. There is no other knife out there that I want that I would pay that much for. Now maybe some things in my head that I might pay that much for if it would suddenly appear but you have all read my posts, threads and rants.

How would I change it ? What don’t I like ?

I am considering starting a new thread or sending a note to Benchmade . . . this is super trivial . . . I would ask for or suggest they maybe ADD a model choice, the 940-1 Osborne . . . POINT ONE :
dif = thicker handle but same exact shape.
Could call it “The Fat Boy”. Don’t discontinue the original OBVIOUSLY just add a fat handle option.

Bottom line (at least so far) I am so happy; THANK YOU BENCHMADE.

Hey man I just picked up my carbon fiber 940 today. Same thing. My blade wasn't free swinging and the axis lock was tight. Almost restrictive. It was the last 940 they had. I live in NYC and scoured the web for physical 940s I can see in a store bc I ordered a 940 on the mail/web the classic and it didn't come in plastic like you would see in un boxing vids. Anyway the carbon fiber is a lot tighter than the classic and there both bought in one week virgin blades.

Yeah me either just a few to really get a visual and understanding for the 940. I bought t6 and t10 torx screws to take it apart and line up the washers and possibly sand them down a bit if they are abrasive and not smooth. The knife was a display, the date in the blue box is 6/12/17 so I'm guessing it's just brand new

you actually gonna carry the 940? also nyc resident here. axis lock, compression lock, and flippers gonna have you in cuffs bro...

No they won't Josh.
It's all in how you carry yourself. If you walk around like a regular human you will have no issues. Get in a fight and pull the knife.....cuffs.

I'm going to respectfully disagree. To me that's the equivalent to saying, if I walk around like a normal human being with a bag of cocaine in my pocket, i will have no issues. And i know this sounds ridiculous and outlandish off the bat, but humor me, and hear me out. It is actually a decent analogy, because a benchmade axis lock with a free falling shut action is 100% a "gravity knife" to the NYPD right now, especially within city limits. if you're caught with one, then you're getting booked.

New York City has stop and frisk laws, and they are used. Cops standing around in populated areas and subways stop and frisk on a daily basis, and those of us who live in the city walk around and take the subway a lot. Sure, i've never been randomly stopped and frisked, but i have had my bag checked. If i were to be frisked and I happened to have a 940 with that sweet buttery swing open, drop closed action on me, yes, i would absolutely be taking a trip to the station.

therefore, on the off chance that one day i do get stopped and frisked because the dude walking in front of me was smoking a joint, and the cop thought he smelled it on me, i'd much rather he'd find my CRK Mnandi, or a slip joint, or my Benchmade small summit lake, and when he asks why i'm carrying a knife, i can say "it's korean melon season! i'm going to grab some of those beautiful yellow suckers and enjoy one in the park". That or one of the other "stories" in my repertoire.

TLDR: i just wanted to make sure my man here knows what he's doing with that 940. don't wear it clipped in your pocket, don't wear it on a tool belt, keep that sucker hidden, and understand the risk you're taking by carrying. that's all folks

Grew up in Brooklyn and Manhattan......40 years total. Still play pool in the city, 4th & 11th.
I have carried constantly and never been stopped for any reason whatsoever.
Guess you have a point and it is better to be safe. The ONLY time I have seen someone stopped......if I was a cop, I would've stopped the dude.

i grew up in NJ, but also spent a good amount of time in Queens, where my dad worked. That was back when i wasn't allowed out of the car in manhattan, and had to wait in the car til we were safe in queens lol. i do agree there's not a huge risk, I carry every day as well, just restricted to the "safer/non threatening" side of my collection. I guess i've just gotten more risk adverse because having a clean record goes a long way these days.
