Lucky find! Keep visiting that area for more and don't tell a soul about it! Enjoy them!!!

By the way, is that your new JK? Nice knife!

Awsome! Can't hardly wait for them to pop here. Shouldn't be long.

Nice find, I usually go find them for my pops. Lots of fun in finding 'em.

Man, that picture has got me hankerin' bad!!!!:thumbup::thumbup: I know a lot of folks like 'em fried, and I do too, but I've just love 'em with ground venison in spaghetti or sauteed in butter, garlic and green onion over some venison back-strap. I have been saving a bunch of it the freezer just for that since November...

I have never eaten a morel and am ignorant of the fuss... I've heard about them fleetingly, but have absolutely no experience with them... can someone enlighten me, please? :o

Morels are a delectable fungus that have a meaty taste that is desired by many! Part of their appeal is the hunt of them itself since they have, as you say, a relatively short season in most parts, and can be somewhat elusive. Most morel hunters are VERY protective of their "honey holes". If you punch morel into a search engine, you'll find more info than you care to read, but this site is pretty informative: http://www.morels.com/

Took the dogs for a short hike yesterday and found enough to fill my hat. All were brown and found them within about a 25 yd. stretch of a small spring. It is earlier than normal for this area but we had a lot of good rain last week and the temps got into the 60s. The weather forcast for next week calls for temps in the 30s and snow flurries so it may be awhile before any more are found.

A hatful makes a nice mess. I left the two that I found hoping the spores will seed the ground for next year.

cool. i cant wait till they come up around here. you can pick any morels you find since they distribute their spores when they pop up.

On the subject of distributing spores. I carry morels in a mesh bag in hopes that I will distribute spores throughout the woods. When I find old dried or soggy ones I hang them up in a tree so that wind and rain will scatter the spores. Dont know if that actually works but have been told it does.

I carry in a mesh bag as well just in case there are any spores left to spread. Last year I also kept the water I soaked them in and sprayed it in what I felt were key areas on my property just to see if it would work. We shall see.

If it works keep us informed. Ive been dumping water in the same spot for years and not one shroom has sprouted. I think you need to find an area that is already morel compatible.

Yeah, it's just wishful thinking probably. I doubt it can be that simple. I just thought it beats pouring it down the sink into the septic tank. Heck, for all I know, the chemicals in the tap water kills the spores...::cool:

I love morel "psychology". So fun trying to figure these little critters out. My parents live near Paducah, Ky and are finding them now. The "harvest" moves north. We'll start seeing them here in NW Indiana right around the beginning of May. This wet weather should make it a great year for them.

by the way- small knife: cut don't pull el out. Leave the base. At least that's what I've heard and been doing. They do keep coming back.

Thanks for the info, I'll definitely be keeping an eye out for them when I'm out on my scouts... Anyone know how prolific they are in NE Pennsylvania?
