Here are some pics of my 1st real attempt of making a knife. Let me bring you up to speed on these pics. They were taken after I cut it out with a jigsaw and shaped on a sander now I am putting on the bevel. Please don't be shy tell me if I'm doing any thing wrong. what kind of knife does this look like? I was trying for a skinner type but it looks as if I don't have enough belly in the blade. The steel is 0-1. I will post more pics as I get th work done.

Thanks for any help.

Todd

Good first attempt. You can take your grinds a little higher on the blade though. It will make for better geometry. Right now, it looks as though the blade is the same thickness until about 1/4" from the edge.

I have just started grinding and remembered i wanted some pic through out the job. Once I get started some times I have to take a step back and reevaluate the situation.

I like the shape. It is more the shape of a caping knife that would go great with a skinner.

good knife, make sure you drill all your holes prior to heat treat. I think the handle will look really good. Not sure where your handle will end but there looks to be a dangerous indent for your index finger just behind the bevel. You may want to make the angle to the bevel sharper and deepen the finger grove so you are not as close to the edge of the blade.

Looks good for the 1st real knife. I would grind up more on the blade. I will be happy to see what it looks like when you get it it done. :)

Looking great so far, Todd. What are the dimensions?

The grind so far looks a little 'Scandi'ish to me, but perhaps you aren't finished with it. If it's fairly small, it could make a nice all around utility blade or perhaps a bird and trout style hunter.

I look forward to seeing pics of your progress.

Looks good but I question the hole near the guard, it seems a little too close for a colby or loveless bolt, I am assuming from the hole size that is what you plan to use) It would not hurt to drill one a little farther back. The handle will cover the holes but you have to shape the front of the guard and that will cut pretty deep into your bolts.

The handles and the pins will be Micarta of the same color. The last hole is for a nickle silver lanyard hole.

As the other guys said, you could grind your bevels higher for a better geometry. Just one more thing, if you intended to make a skinner... well... you didn't give it enough belly, that's for sure. Other than that you can get a great knife out of that.

Looks good. Grind is high enough in the latest pics, good plunge lines. If you're using micarta pins make sure to use a quality epoxy and you shouldn't have any problems. Good work.

How thick is the stock? It looks pretty thin (which is fine for a design like this) so a saber- or scandi- grind 3/4 of the way up the blade might be plenty. Then again it doesn't look like it's meant for beating on, so make it sharp sharp sharp :D

Round off the corners of the butt a little bit and smooth out the curve on the underside of the tang. Get it pretty close, so you use the steel profile as a template when you grind the scales later.

With just scales and no bolster, I think you'll be ok with the front pin-hole where it is. Is that what you were thinking?

I any case, I like it. Nice little EDC/caper/small game/bird&trout knife there
Keep it up Todd!

OK I did a little more work on the blade today and did some practice with my camera.(so I hope these pic are better) The blade goes to heat treat tomorrow right after I get out of work. (wish me luck:jerkit:)

Here it is after heat treat and after polishing

You have spent a fair time with the buffer, haven't you? :D I don't own one so I don't actually know it would affect grind lines but... if you overwork it, you will round all the edges and bevel transitions... ¡be carefull!

Other than that, it looks good. Now slap some handles on that blade and let's see it put to use!

Mikel

OK I have not sharpened it or made a sheath yet. But here it is. Made of 0-1 steel blade, mint green micarta handle & pins, nickle silver lanyard hole. Blade is 4" long with a over all length of 81/4" long. I'm pretty pleased with this first real knife I have made if I had known it was this much fun I would have started making them years ago.

Thank you guys for any past and future hints and suggestions

Todd
