2 Types of People...

I think there must be two types of people (knife people) who think a certain way..... Which way is Right???

No, I'm not talking about the obvious.... Fixed blade or Folder.

I'm thinking more along the lines of when you read "8" Hunting knife" are Your thoughts going towards

1. Really cool knife with a 8" blade
or
2. A knife with an overall length of 8", possibly only a 3" blade.


Which way is correct?
*and this applies to all styles of knives?

For folders I'd assume OAL.

thats mostly b/c an 8' blade is way too much for what I want on a hunting knife.

I meant this as just an example... It could be phrased as a 8" Chef's knife. How long would the blade be?

and I'd call that an 8" blade
I dont see consistency in the industry and don't apply it consistently myself - as seen here.

personally I like to see both overall and blade length

If I see a length listed without it being specific I'm always going to assume it's blade length since that is what makes the knife useful in the first place.

Jaws? You're going to need a bigger knife!



3.75" Handle, 4.25" Blade.

Enough to grip, something short and fast to keep sharp.

And the type of sheath matters too.

I have noticed that makers vary in how they list knives, but It seems blade length listed for culinary knives, choppers, camp knives, etc.

I too prefer to see all dimensions listed.

Sig is advertising an 8.1-inch knife, by which they mean OAL. There are so many inconsistencies in knife-world advertising that it should be specified what the measurement is referring to.

I’m somewhat concerned about handle size, I’ve received a few that don’t fit right :/

"8" chef's knife" definitely means 8" blade, largely because that is perhaps the most popular blade length of chef's knives (though personally I prefer 10").
