2 Types of People...

Sig is advertising an 8.1-inch knife, by which they mean OAL. There are so many inconsistencies in knife-world advertising that it should be specified what the measurement is referring to.

That's what I mean..... When I see 7" knife in a title of a link, I'm going to open it. I expect a 7" blade.
not a 2.5 inch blade... hahah :/

Looking over at my kitchen knives which I have arranged on 2 wall magnets, I can tell you the Blade Length of every one of them.
I have no idea what any of their OALs are, and I could care less.

I've never bought a knife based-on total knife length.

So you care?

Sorry, it's a pet peeve I've acquired. Everyone says I could care less, which means they care 🤣

I couldn't care less, now that means you don't care.

Just razzing you.

I think there must be two types of people (knife people) who think a certain way..... Which way is Right???

No, I'm not talking about the obvious.... Fixed blade or Folder.

I'm thinking more along the lines of when you read "8" Hunting knife" are Your thoughts going towards

1. Really cool knife with a 8" blade
or
2. A knife with an overall length of 8", possibly only a 3" blade.

Which way is correct? :P
*and this applies to all styles of knives?

-It's Thursday morning and this is what I think about...
If I'm researching a knife to buy , I'm not going to "assume" either way .

I've seen both ways commonly used in marketing , so I'd say there is no definite right or correct interpretation .

Best to find the exact specs , stated clearly . Avoid disappointment !

Nah,
I know how to properly use the English language.
I purposely typed "I could care less" because I actually could care less.
OALs are not important enough for me to spend any time to think about.

I assume the measurement refers to blade length but I like the post above that said to make sure before buying.

Every once in awhile I will see an ad for a knife that says for example “OAL 3.75 inches” but it’s obvious that the OAL is longer than that and they are really referring to the blade length.

Personally, I could care more about OAL.

New age word use.
Measurements referred to blade length unless accompanied by the qualifier “OAL”.
Now, we guess.
The
Things change.
When talking about striped bass in the NE, “A 40” used to mean a 40 pounder. Nowadays it’s a 40 inch-er.

I think blade length first. But it really depends on your mind set, lately I have been really enjoying small fixed blades, and I think 8 inches overall now, something with a good four finger handle, so at least 4 inch handle and about a 3.5 blade, maybe .5 ricasso or guard.

I’m a hunter far more than I’m a knife collector, I think of a 8” blade when someone says that. Also having said that, I couldn’t think of anything more impractical personally. A 3-4” blade is plenty for a hunting knife.
I have had and still own 6” skinners since a kid I used helping the old man butcher sheep, cattle and wild shot deer but smaller drop points are far more handy for me.
