I’m a hunter far more than I’m a knife collector, I think of a 8” blade when someone says that. Also having said that, I couldn’t think of anything more impractical personally. A 3-4” blade is plenty for a hunting knife.
I have had and still own 6” skinners since a kid I used helping the old man butcher sheep, cattle and wild shot deer but smaller drop points are far more handy for me.
Yeah, I put my foot in my mouth when I used the type "Hunter". I was just pulling a type of knife out of the air.... for conversation sake.
It could be... 8" edc, 8" Camp knife, 8" Chef, 8" Dive knife, 8" Field knife, whatever.....Doesn't even Have to be 8"

I just see in the titles often Here with length stated, and it feels misrepresented If they meant overall length....Ha. ;)
-I wouldn't open the link If i knew it was a 3" Camp Knife..... 🤣

I guess to answer the question, when I read a length description I’d tend to think think blade length. In use though the largest game animal I’ve ever dressed are whitetail deer (smallest = squirrels), and my Buck 110 with an overall length of a little over 8in with its 3 3/4in blade and it feels plenty big in my hand. It has never left me wanting more or less, so if I saw a knife described as 8in, my first thought would be that they were listing full length, because in my limited experience I’d never want a 8in blade to dress the types of animals I’ve hunted for.

Full specs in a sales post. No ambiguity.

But if there’s a pic, it should even matter.
Yes, Obviously all specifications in listing.

I'm talking about the initial title... recently we had a listing.... 6 inch edc for sale.

by the title is it 6" blade, or six inches Total?..... we'll never know 🤣 🤣 🤣

OAL is good to know when you look for a smaller fixed that will fit into your pocket.
As a standard of description, I think it's confusing and if I look for an 8" knife I will automatically assume this is the length of the blade.

When I was a kid I thought a hunting knife had to be a big heavy duty chonker. Almost fighting knife style.

After getting older and actually using knives I realized that I didn't want to field dress anything with a big ass knife.

Honestly I think a really sharp full sized sodbuster would be better to field dress. Just to cut the guts and the pooper out. If fixed blade maybe something like a Schrade 148. Great blade shape.

If I was doing it in a kitchen I'd be using a boning knife and a skinner.... Why not use one of them. Probably mostly a boning knife with its nice low profile, flexible and curved blade.

To each their own. My grandpa used a Schrade 165 which has a thick upswept blade. G-grandpap used a Randall fighter. Definitely not my top choices for field dressing but very useful for most other outdoor activities.

Back in the big hunter days there was the assumption that you may have an unexpected overnight in the woods.
Back when a PSK was called dry matches & some rope.
:D

I usually assume the stated length is the blade length, unless I am looking at an ANZA. On the ANZA site, the knives are grouped according to the size (blade length) of file they are made from. That is the only spec they give you, which bears only a loose relation to the OAL of the knife. For that you have to look at the photo of the knife, which also shows a smaller photo of the knife laid next to a ruler. Of course, you can also see the length of the blade, but they are not going to come right out and tell you.
Fortunately, a lot of their knives come in at 7” or less, which suits them well for pocket carry.

I'd think blade length also, though I understand where this is coming from, some ads or descriptions can be ambiguous. Though I must also say it has never crossed my mind to search for a knife based on an overall length

I meant this as just an example... It could be phrased as a 8" Chef's knife. How long would the blade be?
I would always assume 8" is the blade length.

Calling a knife with a 4" blade an 8" knife is kinda like calling a shop vac 3.5hp when you can only get 2.4 hp out of a 120V/15A circuit ... and that's assuming 100% motor efficiency, which is "just a bit" optimistic LOL
