Hello all,

I am new to knifemaking and continuing to upgrade the tooling I need.

I just finished this 2 x 48” horizontal grinder. It is somewhat similar to a BMW grinder, but I changed a few details to better suit my needs. The big changes are:
1. Different adjustability: All the work tables on my grinder (except the small wheel work table) are fixed, and I designed the other pieces to be adjusted (i.e. moveable platen, moveable small wheel holder which pivots left to right, and a removable small wheel work rest). All of these adjustments are from the 3/8” bolts used to assemble the pieces, thus only one tool is needed to adjust the grinder for different wheels.
2. Small wheel clearance: I wanted the small wheel holder to hang over the bench to allow me to freehand rotate knives (and bows). Thus I relieved the sides around the small wheel holder and made a tool rest to fit the design.
- I created some simple plans, along with the materials lists and I will try to post those on here as well. I don’t think there are any free plans out there at the moment, thus thought this would be a good start for someone trying to build there own.

Here are some “assemble along” pics:

Installing the rubber feet.

The dyed underside is routed out for clearance for the 56C motor face.

Installing the tracking mechanism...I would suggest making one of these yourself rather than buying.

On the underside of the small wheel holder, I inset a brass sleeve (which pivots on that ¼” screw put in the tip earlier)

Sweet grinders galore batman! Looks like a disk sander is going in on the left? Very nice work.

Congrats, man. That is really sweet. I have a wood shop but no access to mill or metal lathe. I'm curious what machines you used to make stuff on that level?

Yes, it is a 2 x 72" kmg clone in the background that I built out of 6061. I did a small build along of that on another site, but i will paste it up on here too. I have nothing but a woodworking shop as well, no mills or lathes... I bought all the wheels/components and the cutting/sanding etc was all done with jig saws, hand tools and woodworking sanders (well and that 2x72 you see in the background).

Thanks for the comments.

Great work. Keep us posted.

How about a few shots of the small wheel fork? Thanks

Nice, really nice.
Did you get the plans for this online, and if so where?

I made the plans up myself...I searched and searched prior to starting this trying to find plans for a horizontal. Essentially the plans are a full materials list and a PDF of the drill/tap locations of the base plate. Using the pictures above, the materials list and the base plate hole/tap measurments it should be pretty easy to replicate.

If anyone wants the plans, can you just shoot me a PM/Email with your external email address and I will attach them and send.

Thanks
