2004 Model Survey

As long as the thread is back and the questions raised;

1. Dragonfly needs to be updated.

2. Pro-Grip needs to be updated.

3. Stainless scales as frames vs G-10.

Thanx for the input, I think I'll start a few new threads for your additional input.

Jeffj. With regards to the SS dragonfly being too heavy, we've learned that many of our customers like the heft. Since most of the design team was "hi-speed, low-drag, light 'n fast", We needed to learn the core of their thinking to be able to design products that served their wants and needs. Some of these values will no doubt come up in the above new threads.

Jeff (U812), I'd like to "peel back the onion" on the G-10 vs stainless concept.

hey J-man. I can guarantee the Millie, Endura, Delica and Dragonfly. Can't guarantee the SpyderHawk. Have to make room for the "flies" ;)

I have found that while I like SS scales I allways seem to buy and carry G10 more.

G-10 all the way

I'm one of those that likes a bit of heft in the handle, but given the choice of G-10 or SS then it is G-10 every time.

On the larger knives (Military), and those specifically desined for dressing in the field (Impala), I think G-10 without a back spacer is the way to go.
However, on my medium to small knives (Rookie, Standard, Native) I prefer plain black G-10 with steel back spacers. I get the grip and comfort of G-10 but still have significant heft because of the spacer.

For me black G-10 looks more no nonsence workman like.

The SS models of the Delica/Endura are they selling as well as expected with the A-6?
Certian models in SS such as the Dragonfly I like, the only change should be to upgrade to VG-10 in those.
The SS Cricket was a great idea it should stay.
G-10 Natives way outclass the other models even without the shell inlay.
The SS Native just seems too heavy to me.
Police and Millie are so close in size as much as it pains me to say this the Police SS should go :( .
Bring back the Navigator in G-10 offer it in a few different colors with ss liners and VG-10.
Merlin
Harpy. hmmmmmmm I have both but the Hawk makes them redundent.
Civie-keep it axe the Matriarch.
I can't comment on the Ladybug or Jester models, seems like nice key chain knives but I'd never buy 1, simply too small.
Can't imagine why anyone would want to axe the combo edge IMO it's THE most useful design period.
I agree with you about the flat grind on the fly and Salsa, although I'd probably keep only the Ti model, the aluminuim colors wear away too quick and they loose apperance after that.
Chinook IS THE strongest folder I've ever held in my hands-keep itbut only in PE.
Ron

Definitely keep the Delica, Endura & Military.
Offer the Delica & Endura in a fully flat ground version, with SE & PE black blade variants.
PLEASE offer the Military excatly as it is, but with a black blade & 1/2" shorter handle; drop the combo edge as even the fully serrated edge has that useful 1" plain edge up front;
and PLEASE offer this variant without the 'Military' & 'Earth' inscriptions on the blade...

G10 is alot more useful as an edc. Gripier, lighter, doesn't show scratches like stainless, I like G10 alot more than stainless for handles. IMHO Spyderco needs more smaller knives w/G10, A Calypso Jr. would be a GREAT little knife with G10 in the reg. lineup !! just my .02 ;)

I'm primarily a FRN Delica man, but G-10 beats stainless hands down. On larger / longer than Delica models, tip down carry.

Just to throw out there:

As to the Delica. I'd like to see pink with a plain edge and the o.d. green / black bade with plain edge.

Something in Realtree Camo, G-10, tip down, Cobra Hood, a back lock with Dent, and flat ground S30V or VG-10. (A fellow can dream, can't he?)

I am on a plane, so here are my dislikes first.

Anything with metal handles - scratches and slips too easily. YUK!

Soft metal blades - why not stay with VG-10, s30v for all of them?

Love the FRN handles! Easly to maintain - age well - do not show scratches or wear easily from pocket junk!

What would happen if you were exclusively a flat grind company? Very astetic, easy to sharpen.......love all of the flat grinds - if you have it flat ground, I have bought it.

As you have simple, all time workers like the Delica/Endura that are everymans knife, why not keep the handles simple as those, but with a variety of blade shapes as the only changes(?) A 3 and 4 inch Wharncliff would be great - same with a bowie blade - saber points like the Natives (great classic also!). The staples of marketing. People always comment as to the friendly grips for lefties and all, so how about just different blades for the everymans wallet/pocket. PLEASE do NOT spread your usage of AUS-6 steel to these ideas.(easy to sharpen-easy to dull)
Please stay with your better steels.
A good thread survey might be to find out how long folks have owned your standbye's, like the delicas.

landing soon - I will print this out and give a better answer soon.

Thanks for letting us have a say - you represent your company and county well!

Sal, thank you for asking us. Lot of postive feedback from the memebers.
I replaced my Dyad Jr. for Cricket C29SBK...Love it !!!
Seems we want larger model with better steel for heavier chores and smaller model for general usage!
None of my Spyderco's have AU steel .
As for SS handles ! I buy to have engraved for family and special friends.
My Gunting C68GPS is great model. Now I want a full "spyderedge" for it.

Kitchen knives can go .
BTW keep the " Kiwi -C75 " till I can pick one up.
Thanks again .

Sal,

I didn't take the time to read what everyone else has said but here's my "must keep list":

Endura
Delica
Civilian
Military
Police
ProGrip
Native
Salsa
Lil' Temperance
Impala
Chinook

I'm not a big fan of the SS versions of any of the knives because for my purposes they're too heavy and doesn't provide enough grip unless like the progrip it has an insert. Please, please, please don't eliminate the Native made in Golden, it definately has a better feel and smoother action than the Native III and you can't beat S30V (the native is my favorite EDC of all time!). I can't comment on all of your knives since I've only owned or handled the knives listed above. Keep up the good work and I can't wait to see the new lineup!

As for the Ladybug and Jester, just carry them in black.

The Rescue Models... carry them only in black or orange... drop the blue.

Can the Pro-Grips, Impala(with and without gut hook) Catcherman, Spyderench (never seen one for sale much anyway), and Spydersaw... Temperance trainer. Also get rid of the clip point Lil' Temperance, keep the drop point.

Carry the Salsa in black only

The Rescue line is a bit crowded... Give the Assist and D'Allara sometime, if they work out, you could trim some of the existing line

The Native that is made in Golden in S30V is as close to being a perfect multi-use folder you can get, IMHO - scores big on quality, steel, looks, user-friendliness, value for price, everything. The Chinook is a keeper too, and I like the look of the Yojimbo. I dont like the SS in the handle - very heavy and seems cumbersome compared to G10.

Oops .... I'm just noticing that this is an old thread ... I guess the comments still apply, so I'll leave em ......

C12GS Civilian G-10
I'm not sure about actual sales, but when I can stuff a light Matriarch in my pocket, why would I reach for the heavier, much  more expensive Civie ... Ditch it.

C13PS ProGrip Stainless
C13PSBK ProGrip FRN
These 2 are hard sells and the design is a bit dated. Prune em...

C66PBK Frank Centofante Vesuvius II
C66PSBK Frank Centofante Vesuvius II
Sigh .... In spite of the fact that I've collected all of the Vesuvius variations, I've NEVER reached for one to carry ... I've got a couple of spare V-III's in my chest that I use for gifts .... Cause I picked them up NIB for 27 or 28 bucks.. NUFF said ..? I think the earlier comment about this knife giving the compression lock a bad name is accurate ...

C69GP Lil’ Temperance Leaf
C69GS Lil’ Temperance Leaf
C69GP2 Lil’ Temperance Trailing Point
C69GS2 Lil’ Temperance Trailing Point
With all due respect, because I know this knife has a following here, I've sold all mine. It's just too bulky / chunky to carry comfortably.

C71CBP Salsa – Cranberry
C71CBPS Salsa – Cranberry
One colored version is enough. Ditch the Cranberry.

C72P Pride
I think the last one I sold brought around 20 bucks. Prune it.

C77SBK SpyderHawk
Well ....... I hate to go after the Spyderhawk ..., but I've only held on to my Forums hawk ... The others are now gone. Between the Matriarch and Spyderhawk ...., I'd reach for the Matriarich every time since it seems a bit more compact and a bit lighter.

LBK Ladybug – Black
LBL Ladybug – Blue
LRD Ladybug - Red
I'd let em go. The Jester is just a much better knife.

FB04 Fred Perrin
Hmmmm ... I struggle with this one and have sold all of mine. Very subjective here, but I just don't like it. Unless it's a big seller ... I'd prune it.

T02S SpyderSaw
Uh .... knives or saws ??? Prune it.

Sal, I'm not sure where your thinking is on the kitchen knives or how profitable they are, but MAN .... I sure do like them. I used to have nothing but Cutco in my kitchen block, but have gradually been migrating to Spyderco (as the ole budget allows ...). KEEP THE KITCHEN KNIVES ...

I want to put in a good word for a couple of models. The 6 inch serrated kitchen knife is an outstanding tool and value in meal preparation. I have given a lot of these knives as gifts and use one frequently. These knives are one of the best values and performers on the market. I'm often told by people recieving these knives, that they are their favorite knife in the kitchen. The spydersaw is another wonderful tool. I've put these in the pockets of several orchardists and they love the light wieght and high performance. The blade being tapered from the edge back allows for binding free opperation. No set to the teeth is necessary with the taper. This allows for a higher quality steel to be put into the saw blade hence better performance. For those folks that wish to have a fly under the radar often choose this piece as a defensive tool, as there are not many laws restricting the carrying of a saw..Ed

Thanx for the input. I guess our 2004 survey is becoming a 2005 survey. Certainly timely. Quite a few models will be "retired" at the end of the year. Need to make room for the new models that are well received (like Ed's Persian ;) ).

We appreciate the suggestions, especially with reasons.
