2004 Model Survey

Sal, if you can't answer this question I understand. Do the small blades sell well? I really like the Salsa, Cricket, Dragonfly and the discontinued Navigator and Co-Pilot. The opinions here seem to favor doing away with the Salsa, one of my favorites and ther seems to be some antipathy towards the smaller blades. Just wondering...

Hi Gadgetman7. They sell better than many here might imagine. The new Cricket in SS in popular. Salsa's hold their own but there are a lot of new features on the Salsa that will take time to catch on. Dragonfly's are steady. It's probably about time for a Dragonfly upgrade. The Navigator was disco's because we made a large amount for two customers that placed large orders and then cancelled. We had to close them out to move the volume. Navigators will more than likely return with a new variation.

Sal, thanks for the answer. I've managed to convert many people who didn't normally carry knives with the smaller Spydercos. The Navigator was especially popular. If you bring the Navigator back would you consider a compression lock like on the Salsa Ti? I would like any handle but FRN (too light) or SS (too heavy for this knife.) Sorry to hijack the thread but thanks again for the answer.

I would say keep the Spyderwrench, it uses the best blade steel I've seen in a multi-tool, with a blade that one can actually use. I'm getting ready to buy one to put in my camelback for my mountainbiking backup tool.:)

Ax the following - for no other reason than I don't like them!

Get rid of Salsa Alum. Keep Ti only... too many variants of an odd knife.
Get rid of Meercats. Don't like Phantom lock and had probs with QC.
Get rid of Dragonfly - dated.
Get rid of Matriarch - as said, Hawk does more for more folks.
Ax the Ladybug - Jester's better.
Get rid of the native - don't like ergs, etc.
Ax Morans - a great knife back in the day, now dated.
Ax all Pro-Grips and variants - dated and better stuff in lineup.
Bye Catcherman - don't see appeal.
Lum Tanto - too specific, etc.
See ya Vesuvius - flexy handle and SHARP bump over hole...

BUT - bring back the Wegner Jr. PE and Copilot PE - best knives ever!

Spyders rock but some have to die to let the strong survive and new ones be born...

Why drop the Endura and Delica's?? They seem to be the most popular long timers. A lot of posts and articles mention those models. I bought mine because of the great popularity.

C13PS ProGrip Stainless
C13PSBK ProGrip FRN
C29PBK Cricket FRN

C66PBK Frank Centofante Vesuvius II

Sal, with reference to your answer about the sales of small blades, please give production of the Tusok some consideration. I think it will be very popular. I have a queue of British students who would like to buy one...

Sal,

Hope my comments are not redundant, but I did not have time this morning to read all the posts. My vote for the kill list has to do with the following:

FB05S Temperance

The serrated blade is not needed, IMO because the Temperance FB has more overall utility with the plain edge.

(You probably know more about what you are selling and not than any of us because of your inventory stats.)

Too many SKUs is a tough thing.

Sal,

Unfortantly I really can't comment on this thread as I haven't had any experience with most of Spyderco's current line up. I can comment on the Ti Salsa and the Meerkat. Keep both of them. I'm sad to see the Herbst and Viele models go, they were two favorites of mine.

Sorry to get OT, but this caught my attention:

! What kind of upgrades?
I love the SS D'fly:D

Wow I totally missed that! Sal and Co. can you please update the steel to VG-10?? Or if it's possible to bring production to America...S30V??

would it be possible to strengthen the tip by design on the civilian just a little bit? if so, between that and the spyderhawk, there's really not much prupose for the matriarch line. it's too long to be legal in many places, and not so much shorter than the civilian.

no comment on the others, because i have little experience with them. so far.

I keep reading how the PROGRIP is so 'dated'.

Let's see ...
*Progrip is the only folding Spydie w/rubber inserts, it has the best retention of ANY spyderco ,in the pocket and in the hand. imho.

* The tip is stronger than any Delica. If people want to keep the Delica because it is "tactical" they are missing the boat by discontinuing the Progrip... more belly means better slashing as well.

The progrip is a sleeper, unappreciated, and excellent for both utility and defense!

Just a suggestion in the lineup...perhaps for future consideration.

The stainless models have never excited me...too heavy. When you consider upgrading, as in the Dragonfly, drop the stainless version and use Micarta/VG10.

This would be a nice upgrade for the usual lineup:
Delica
Endura
Dragonfly
Calypso, Jr. (I know that you are doing a special run)
etc.

Here is another approach to consider:
Do a regular limited run on a model with upgraded components. It looks like Benchmade is gathering some steam with this approach.

Again this doesn't answer you original question, but are just my thoughts. As to the original question, I say that the Dragonfly is a keeper. Excellent design and size. (I do agree with you Sal, that an upgrade is in order, i.e., a VG10 blade!)

IMO it is dated.
I would love to see it redesigned into G10 PE with the kryton inserts in the g10.Take the kryton out of the pocket clip,I had one years ago and like it except for that.Hard to get out of the pocket and the kryton eventually came out of the clip or supply two clips, one with and one with out.

Colored G10 Dragon fly!!
Also I would love to see a fly with a 3in blade length but I guess that would be a Calypso jr.
