2007 Little Rock Preview

Yep, daily flights too and fro from Dallas, Atlanta, Denver and a couple of other hubs I think.
Interesting thing about the Arkansas show. One is for the judging of the knives for awards, tape must be put over the name on the knives. This year we are going to try and start a mentor program on how to train the judges to what to best look for. Right now all across the country they just grap up whoever, sometimes they get qualified people and sometimes the folks they get are not knowledgable enough to say which one is best and why. So, we will start that this year. Arkansas also will have a technical judge. He at this point anyway will have no vote, but if the judges runs into a tech question he can answer it.

Great program Jerry to get new judges into the mix.
I think anything we can do to get establish collectors more involved and new collectors interested is a good thing.

Hey folks,
Some very fine knives at the Little Rock show. Just a few pics of Lin's spread. They sure didn't last long.

I would like to have got a hold of that fighter, but someone beat me to it. Thats okay though.....I got the Sheephorn Bowie, very pleased with it.

Thanks for the pics Starkman - and congrats on the sheephorn bowie. Any news of award winners and such?

Roger

Thanks Roger, the only award I know of is Jerry Larison-Best Giraffe Bone Knife. Sweet hunter you picked up from Mike Ruth.....very nice. Maybe someone else will chime in about the awards.

And a nice Sheephorn Bowie it is.
Lin sure does have a nice spread there. He has gotten a lot of attention in the last year or so from both the knife media and enthusiast and sure deserves it.

Great pics guys! Lot's of nice eye candy. The Ruth hunter and Rhea sheephorn bowie are my two favorites of the bunch!

Just returned through more snow in N. Arkansas and S. Missouri. I think global warming took a short break here in the midwest?

Some of the awards were announced as I was trying to keep up with Danbo (and not doing a very good job!), but here are a few more: Bill Ruple - best folder, Ricardo Vilar - best bowie, John White - best hunter and best fighter, J.R. Cook - best art knife, best of show.

Always a great show.

Thanks Joe,

Here's hoping we get so see some of the award-winning knives. I suspect Cookie's blade is already shown above. Special congrats to Ricardo Vilar - best bowie at this show is a real accomplishment. I am dying to see the John White knives.

Roger

PS - Trying to keep up with Danbo at a show is pointless. If you need to find him, the best thing to do is stand still in one place for about 5 minutes - he'll be by soon enough. ;)

I wish I had pictures to share from the show. But, John did deliver a nice stag hunter to me there that I had ordered in 2005. We won't discuss my images, but this 6-inch drop point is 1075 steel, damascus guard and butt cap, Sambar stag handle. John's work is so crisp and clean. He had a beautiful mammoth-handled bowie there that is his first MS test knife. Only four to go. I hope somebody can share some pictures soon.

Roger, as you know, one of the pluses of getting to a show early on the first day is to get to see a few knives Danbo hasn't drooled on. But, you have to be fast! :)

I just got home from Little Rock and the show was outstanding! Met a bunch of wonderful makers and was able to spend time with some old friends! The winners of the awards did an outstanding job! Jr Cook won best art knife and best in show. That knife was posted in this thread. The bowie that Mr Vilar won with was wonderful, had engraving, file work, and a beautiful damascus pattern. Mr White won best hunter and fighter ( nice knives). All in all a great show. The TV crews were there taking pictures of Lin and Jerry. Big bonus was that I did not get kicked out for drooling on the knives:D

And here's a pic of the bowie that won the "Best Damascus" award for Shawn Ellis:

Congrats Shawn!

Chuck....it was good to put a face to the name. I agree about Ricardo's Bowie. It was still for sale as of Sunday afternoon...beautiful knife and what I thought was a good price. To my surprise, there were a few knives that did not sell. If I didn't spend my knife budget Saturday, I would have snagged Ricardo's Bowie.

Neat stuff!! I like it when John White uses his wordworking skill aquired from all those years of boat building and does inlayed handles with contrasting wood.
