2008 CRKT catalog

CRKT is one of those companies; I think they produce an awful lot of fancy stuff, that is innovative and different, but in terms of practicality is more suited for people who don't know about knives and steels to pull out and try and impress people with. However, look past that, and they have some really good quality stuff, at really good prices. My first CRKT was a zytel handled M16 with AUS-4 blade- I've used it for ages, and really abused it, and it's never failed. The lock is as good as new, despite being used as a pry-bar and an anvil, and the blade soesn't take a bad edge, and holds it ok. I've recently got a larger M16 titanium with AUS-8, and I think it's my favorite EDC now.

I think CRKT is generally my favorite brand- as long as you can avoid their image stuff and pick out the good designs, you always know where you are with them and what to ewxpect. For their price, and don't think they can be beaten.

love how CRKT has FINALLY brought in some color.

GALLAGHER BADGER rings a Benchmade bell
GALLAGHER GLIDE LOCK, interesting
Lake series... very interesting
ASHWORTH TURTLE... must have!
Kommer FULCRUM, interesting system, gotta check that one out.
DRIFTER & PAZODA = BM Vex and Byrd?

well impressed by CRKT new designs and systems.
440c is good :-)

That Badger looks really neat , a lot of the new knives look pretty good , I'm suprised though how many of you like the Turtle. :D

I'm wondering if they had to talk with Spyderco about using the signature hole ?

They have many great designs, yes, but for the past few years there has been a continuing trend of lowering quality.
Next thing you know they won't even list hardness because they stopped heat treating their blades.

People really shouldn't put up with this stuff from a company that is capable of so much more.

only thing I saw that came close was a round hole in a pattern on the Triumph fixed blade, but that would come closer to the Kershaw/Onion mark.

The folders with opening holes that I saw were the Thunderbolt, Two-timer, Pazoda, Edgie, Guppie, and Lil Guppie. None of those has a round or comet shaped opening hole that Spyderco holds a trademark over.

Ah , I see what you mean.

After looking at the catalog again.

:D

I see a lot of (In my opinion) ugly toy knives and knives made from low end steel. But I also saw a beauty. I really like the Lake 111.
What about the steel used though? It's said to be 8Cr14MoV. That steel is not explained on page 58 or is it a mistake and did they mean 8Cr13Mov?

Has any one any experiences with those veff serrations?

I can't tell if that Horus is ugly or cool... something very unique about it. Gotta hand it to CRKT, they make knives that are unique. A lot of custom look blades at affordable prices. I myself end up buying a couple a year just because of the unique factor. I get more "can i see that" comments on those CRKTs than many of my quality folders.

That turtle will sell a ton - you know it. Heck, my wife will want one.

Kommer 30-30 is beautiful, turtle is simply fun,
M21 with G10, especially desert one also is interesting design.
But there are way too many "strange" projects.

I've gotten pretty ambivilent about CRKT lately, primarily because of their chisel grind blades. I much prefer v-grinds and the way they cut. That said, however, I very much like the M16-14SF, -14LE, -14T; M21-04 and Desert Cruiser, all with AUS8. And of course the much underrated S-2, now long out of production.

CRKT should upgrade its steel offerings, because their frame designs are excellent. AUS4 is just crap. To see it used in a great frame is a waste.

I recently bought a model 6204 alaska bwana and I didn't even see it pictured in the new catalog. It's an older model designed as Russ Kommer's personal carry knife. It has AUS 6M and has a great handle feel, the most comfortable thing I've ever held. It's made as a skinning knife but it works great on everything that I've put it up to. It really surprised, me especially after I found out that it wasn't at least AUS 8. I was bummed at first, but it just takes a touch up here and there from my diamond rod. I would agree with other posters that they should at least make ALL of their knives out of AUS 8, and that being the lowest possible steel. I do realize that they are very affordable knives (which attracts me to buying one here and there), but just knowing that they have better steel would make me feel better. Anyhoo, here is a pick of my Alaska Bwana.

Dont be bummed bro ! Aus6 is a good steel , as is Aus8.

( yes, there are finer steels , but better is a relative term )

They all have their uses and applications , even  420j2.

I agree. It is a great knife and it is wicked comfortable!
