Just a thought with Blade coming up. I wanted to see if there was interest in having a Traditional Forum year knife made for us by a maker.
I will follow up after Blade and present some options and see where it takes us.

Starting with the hard part, what price range would you consider. I am not going to get into the pattern yet, since the price-range will have an obvious effect. I am adding my own thoughts as to the type of knife that different price levels might cover.

100-200 - sodbuster type working knife.
200-400 - single blade in with some nice handle material.
400-500 - 2 blade range in various handle materials might even find 3 bladers.
500-700 - something pretty special but dang that is a lot of $ for a forum knife. Maybe we would be better off to order what we want.

Would like to see something other than a stockman however, been overdone. A Barlow pattern would be different and usable as well.

If it was anyone but Bastid ...

But, I trust Gus. So I voted ... $200 - $400. Something basic but classy with good fit and finish!

$200 - $400. Old Physics, that silver tongue devil, said it all so I'll just quote him and let him do my talking for me.

I couldn't find the price range. . . .$5 - $10, but I voted anyway. Thomason will pay for my $700 selection. :D

I promise it is not going to be a stockman. :D.

Now if you could get TONY to do it in the top range, I might have voted there instead of 200-400. That would be a winner, no matter the pattern or materials.
:D:D:D:D

I know Jim is kidding, but to clarify for others we will to pick the "battles" that are possible. Not even going to ask Tony or Reese. Don't want to put them into that position at all. :D. Can you imagine the flack they would take if one of them said "yes". ;).

But, if anyone does know of a maker who might be able to take the task on without creating a problem with the maker, my ears are all open. Just send me a P.M. at this point since I do not want to start naming names publicly until we have talked to the makers. I have some folks in mind, but just want to talk to them first. I think we need to have somewhere between 6 and 10 knives or so to make this work (give or take one or two). This has been done in the past (on the now defunct TKCL and some knife clubs) and with patience it can work out well for all involved.

Bad Post, thought I was elsewhere, dang it, only on my 3rd cup of java, takes at least 4 before mind works before fingers.

For me it would really depend on the size. I also lean towards a single blade model. right now price I'd say $400 and under.

I think it would be great. I think a mountain man would be great.

I love the idea of a forum knife but my income keeps the choices on a more modest scale. I can see spending $100+ for such a knife but anything over $200 is out of reach. Most of my knives are $50 and under, collect mostly Camillus and Schrade knives. I have a few Case and a couple of Queen cutlery knives but if the idea is to go for something much more costly than these choices I will have to sit by and watch others have at it.

Tim,

It is going to be pretty hard to have a custom knife made below 100.00. It just takes too much time for a knife maker to make a knife by hand to come close to that type of price.

You may want to see if there is still time to pick up one of the 2008 factory made ones. Ed T is heading up that effort this year and it looks like it is going to a very nice stag stockman in 1095.

Once we have a clear majority on the maker, I will ask them. If they say yes I will ask them what patterns they want to make and we will go from there.

The $200-400 range would be nice. The pattern would be the determining factor for me.

Guys,

The pattern is pretty much going to be the makers decision and in the price range we are moving towards it will be some type of jack pattern. (1 or two blades), if the maker wants to go for it. Right now the makers who have been suggested (and I want to take the suggestions via PM or email) are right in line with the 2 makers I was thinking of who might be in a position to take this on at this point.
