I wanted to start a thread for the price quotes on the forum knives.
The first respponse is from Northwoods.
Hello Ed, The price will be $79.00 each for 50-65. If you can use 100 the price will be $74.00 each. Delivered in approximately 6 months from the date ordered. 25% down with order. Thanks, David Shirley

Remember that to each quote we will need to add tax, and shipping and insurance charges.

I will continue to update until we reach a decision point.
I believe Canal Street will be responding very shortly, thanks to another members prompting ;)

Thank you,
Ed

Now that is a good number for what Northwoods produces. I'ed be in for a Northwoods.

That sounds a reasonable price indeed:thumbup:

Has a decision been taken about type of bolsters or not? I hope engraved ones are off the menu....

Looking forward to more info & thanks for your help.

I had not mentioned scrolled bolsters. I believe this reflects plain.

I have a Northwoods congress in bone and have seen pictures of their stag. I would not have any problem at all if they make the '08 BFC knife for us.
Keep up the good work, Ed.

Definite thumbs-up for a Northwoods Stockman in that price range. I prefer simple bolsters with at most one simple line/groove. Not too big a fan of pinched or scroll work. Can't wait!

Hi guys,
There was an email glitch. Luckily, Eric picked it up. Here is the feedback from Canal Street:

Hi Ed,

My name is Wally Gardiner owner of Canal Street Cutlery Co. At present we don’t stock 1095 obviously a medium stockman is no problem. As a matter of fact we have a new pattern coming on stream in late April that would be perfect. Please see attached jpeg. My background is with Schrade Cutlery and we made a line of knives called OLD TIMER out of 1095 carbon steel and had staining and rusting problems no matter how we tried to explain that 1095 carbon will stain and rust. Many times 1095 will turn while in the package, I’m not sure it’s the best choice for a limited edition for Bladeforums you guys demand the very best and if knives were to discolor it is a property of 1095 not a problem with the maker. If carbon steel is a requirement I would suggest D2 it’s much tougher than 1095 and will stain and rust but nowhere near as easily as 1095.

We can offer the stockman in 440C and possibly D2. Pricing would be around $67.00 with Sambar Stag, serialization, blade etch in our beautiful Canal Street two piece Presidential green box.

Thanks for thinking of us.

Regards,

Wally Gardiner

You might try explaining to him that the people involved in this one understand carbon steel. On the other hand, would they buy a small lot of 1095 just for this?

I really like the lines on that CS, it looks like it would really ride the pocket well...Here is an example of a large Northwoods stag stockman.

Sunburst,
I really like that stage 4 inch stockman. What is the bladesteel, and how comfortable is it to carry?

Ed, is the Northwoods quote for 3 1/2 inch stockman in 1095?

Jay

Hmm, that's a tough call. Both companies produce a solid knife. I kind of like the look of the CS better, but I'd have to see it in stag to say for sure. Too bad CS doesn't want to work with 1095.

Here's a Canal Street 4" stockman for comparison. Sorry about the scratches, been EDC'ing it for a while. I do like the looks of the new stockman, nice bolsters:thumbup:

I like the look of both, but prefer a straight carbon steel to D2. I"m not terribly thrilled about the big mar in the stag where they've inlayed the shield on the one above.

If you want carbon, then I think Northwoods is the one to go for.

If it comes with rounded plain bolsters then that would be perfect.

A discrete blade etching, nice one. Couldn't care less about boxes..if it's carbon it must be a user!

I have to confess I'm a bit down on CS as 2 out of 2 knives have had unpleasant faults. Others have clearly been luckier and that's good.

Personally, I'd prefer carbon steel and simplicity (no etching, fancy scrollwork etc) but that's just the way I like my knives.

I sold a Northwoods medium stag stockman a few months ago that had rounded plain bolsters similar to the CS shown in the picture..It was very nice and I would have to argue if anyone sells nicer stag on todays market than Northwoods..

Northwoods does seem to have consistently beautiful stag. The price they quoted seems quite reasonable to me.

I like the Northwoods as well. Good pattern and I also would prefer the Carbon as apposed to stainless. Also, I have the Canal Street from last year, and don't have a Northwoods yet, heh.

I can also agree that some faults showed up on the last Canal Street. I know that will happen with any company, but there it is.

Oh and the etch is kind of part of the deal to me, sets it apart as the forum knife, so I think we should stick with that, a nice tasteful one like the CS from last year is very nice. As far as scrolling on the bolsters etc, I'm fine with it, but left to my own, I'd probably skip it.

I like Northwoods stag for sure. I also say stick to carbon, whats that saying about D2? "Takes a lousy edge and holds it forever"
