2009 Catalog Supplement

Why are you reacting to what other people say? Go with what Spyderco has decided in regard to the question. "Sprint run" will be used for reissues of former regulars since discoed, and they won't refer to limited numbers unless it's for sure.

What happens when a thread like this continues to scratch open the wound is, Spyderco will decide to give out less and less information, like they no longer want to discuss estimated arrival times.

That will cut back the complaints -- until someone starts wondering why we don't know what's going on anymore.

OK, Esav I won't post anymore about it.

Spyderco has already ceased giving out approximate arrival dates of new knives, I'm assuming due to the forum backlash. I'd hate to see the same thing happen with Sprint or Limited Runs.

A pdf isn't as enjoyable as a paper catalog, although I can understand the business decisions behind that. Thanks for the head's up on where to find these.

Let me clear things up, I deleted the thread after things got out of hand. That thread clearly backfired. Some members took it very personal and threats and infighting followed.
The thread was not directed at any particular member of Spyderco's team, but rather the companies decision regarding this matter.

If I caused any grief to any members of Spyderco's wonderful staff, I apologize, it was not my intention.

Nice work on the apology Rob
For some reason that thread even managed to get me riled up, I'm glad Sal's "shiney footprints" policy made think twice before posting what I was really feeling at the time. I was just as wound up when you deleted the thread, although I've calmed down now and see that it really is better for everyone involved.
Hopefully we have all learnt from this lesson.

Prediction: Next sprint run announced w/out numbers will immediately cause a mass appeal to tell us how many are being made :) I for one like an estimate on the initial run because it lets me know how urgent I need to be about procuring one I am really interested in. If it turns out more are made later due to demand then so be it. I just want spyderco to make money, stay in business as the great company it is and continue to make knives in Golden CO.

I would think a small disclaimer that "if demand continues, we will make more..." would suffice.

My two cents added to an overly large coin jar :)

We can do that.

Sure then everyone is happy. Nobody expects Spyderco to only produce only a certain number and Spyderco can fill whatever need it sees fit to.
Buying Spydercos just to collect will be a bit more difficult, but some of the most collectible models never had any numbers designated in the first place.

You can, but I don't think you should.

A) Without giving an estimate you're creating two groups of people. The people that clamor and buy because they don't know how many, and the people that sit back and wait, also because they don't know how many. If you run out you disappoint one group, if you continue to produce you disappoint the other.

B) The backlash in the decision to continue the Orange Military run was minor. I was initially disappointed, but then I realized that they make great gifts, unique talking pieces, and now I have four. I'm not an unhappy customer. Right now it feels like you're compromising for the sake of the minority.

I know little about Spyderco's inner workings, so take what I have said as a bystanders opinion. The less information you give us, the less we anticipate. Right now we have no release estimates, no timeline, limited pricing information, and now the possibility of no idea the number of knives produced.

So now you want even less information about upcoming knives or knives that are released? Whatever floats your boat, but I don't think blinding us is a good idea.

Josh, this is just one more example of "Don't ask the question if you won't like the answer."

Some people just like to complain. I would like to say we should ignore them, but we don't like to ignore anyone. It would help a lot if everyone stopped to think about the implications of getting what they ask for before getting too loud about it.

Never happen. :(

+1

Gives us the initial production run number and maybe the promise of more, I like it.

I do not collect to collect, I collect to use. I personally like that Spyderco produce what people want.

I do understand why collectors were a little surprised and upset about this knife (orange Millie) suddenly being more available, but its a great looker and a great user (and you won't lose it in the grass.) Now make an orange Para as a permanent run ;)

While a paper catalog still has certain charms, I have to say that since Ted got permission to put all the older ones in PDF format and make them available for download, I hardly ever open my paper ones anymore.

I've seen a lot of company reps yanked off the newsgroups and forums over the years. We're lucky Sal is the boss and a gracious person. I enjoy insight and information about products, but it doesn't have to all come up front for me. I'm ok getting the info after the product release. Then again, I'm not a big collector or investor.
