Just finished up my "cutter" for 2009, nothing special but been a while since ive posted here. I try and make at least 1 a year for myself, but im generally talked out of them long before the year is up :D

Any how, this one is 15" overall, 10" x 2" blade of 1095FG (from Aldo), .345 thick at ricasso. Guard is copper, pin/lanyard liner are 416ss, and the handle is some "scrap" Curly Maple I had lying around.

Still in the "tuning" stage, will probably take a bit more off the top line of the handle and top handle/guard radius. Has plenty of contour on the handle for heavy/hard use. Looking forward to getting out to some of the hammer ins/gatherings and cutting with this one-

Not hard to understand why you get talked out of them. Cool chopper.

That's nice!! Looks like a great grip and I love everything about the blade; steel, thickness, shape...

I love it, the swedge looks killer!

You're not conviced of the "forward lanyard" for a competition cutter?

You're right - the scales don't match - you can't let a piece like this represent you...

send it to me immediately :D

Great looking knife - I'm really liking the copper guard and the clip is awesome.

Matt, that is a wicked knife.

Matt,

Great looking chopper! Gets the year off to a good start to see this from you.

Very nice, sir. Now my only question is why did you do a mortised handle with maple? Maple is probably the easiest wood of all to just drill, file and burn.

thanks all... Joe it cuts very well, still tweaking it a bit here and there. Alot of blade mass out there, as it measureres .345 thick at the ricasso, and still a very substantial .300+ at the spine/clip.

JDM- I mortise most all of my hidden tangs as the tang itself is very wide, theres just about 1/32" shoulder to fit the gaurd then it gradually tapers to 1/2" wide at the butt (tang runs to within 1/8" of the butt end of the handle). So its an awfull big slot to burn/scrape, and fairly easy to mortise cut.

Awesome blade profile on this one, Matt. .345 ought to cut it!! Handle made for action. Great chopper.

will be cutting with it some more today, will post results later. I left the edge a bit thicker on this one, there is alot of "mass" behind that cutting edge with a .345 spine, and I dont want to take a chance of damaging the edge. May have to go back and roll the convex a bit more, will know later.

I would love to take a few whacks with that too! Looks GREAT and I like the copper guard with the maple very much.

Pleasure seeing it.

Peter

Great to read about your tang construction. Shouldn't have any problems with that one. I saw one recently that would I would question whether it would even hold up the blade much less chop anything without breaking or bending. It gave new meaning to the term "narrow tang". You need to wonder what is under some of these handles sometimes.

Looks like it'll do the job of clearing the bamboo in your backyard. Really like the way that copper looks; am glad I asked for that in the bowie you're building for me. Are you going to let it "age" naturally or will you etch it with acid to get a patina?
